This above be true.
But ya gotta think about who you are insulting. Most of the Girls actually go to school and really are student athletes. Its almost like picking on High School kids. The Mens basketball... you can rap them to death. I dont think Imus would have got in trouble questioning how Noah got so ugly given her mother is Miss Sweden. The Ho stuff was a bit much. Only rappers are allowed that stuff.

Although the ugly Presidents daughters on Sat. Night live was always funny. God did they slay Amy Carter. That girl was just beat up. Billy Carter was fair game... (RIP) big fella.

This is actually nothing new for this show, but the "heavy" was different in this situation. They normally have this Bernard character say these things, and then Don tells him it's inappropriate etc. He'll say "That's an unfortunate comment." Seems that the audience accepts the fact that Bernard is a racist,or is playing one.If Don says something outrageous,he almost always apologizes (says that he didn't mean that) right away.I am surprised anybody took this guy seriously. You'd be complaining a lot about this show if you take it seriously.

Phil Mushnick of the NY Post writes about this this morning. He's been on the Imus case for years.

Interesting...how this thread proved something.
When it started, someone said to not take offense.
Then later, when the same someone thought I was taking a shot at him, he took offense (nevermind the unconnected name-calling). Then to defense mode. Yada yada yada.
It only proved my point. Go back and reread this thread from the first page and you might see for yourself.
Now, back to Imus...he'll be on Sharpton's radio show. He also wants to meet the Rutgers Women's BB team to apologize "face to face".
My best guess is that if he had the opportunity to take back his words, he would. Unfortunately for him, it might be too late.
Racism and sexism are not going to go unnoticed, and certainly not unchallenged.

I'm really outraged by Imus and sick of slick racist innuendo.

I'm also sick of BET and WB giving airtime to videos, music and tv shows that have black kids calling one another ho's and ni**as. These dumb kids are basically cr*pping on 300 years of black struggle in the USA to gain respect.

What they've done is made these words and ideas mainstream. Now every white kid--or radio host, like Imus--is using those words to appear cool.

Let's be honest--it's one thing to use a slur within the community, be it black, jewish, polish or whatever--but you are really crossing way over the line to intended insult and racism when you are not part of that group.

One more thing...

Did you know that one of the women Imus insulted has a straight 4.0 average and another has a triple major? To reduce these scholar-athletes to a racist stereotype simply for entertainment is reprehensible.

I'd like to hear Imus say what he said to these girls' fathers and see what reaction he gets. Do you honestly think they'd find it funny?

Please. Do you think that future employers will use Imus comments to some how discriminate against these women? How is it tangibly harmful to these people? Get over it. Stop being so serious. Have the Washington Redskins really harmed Native Americans? Was any one person singled out and ridiculed? It was a joke, a bad one but that's life.

I disagree. I don't think it's right to slur those kinds of words PERIOD. I don't care if you're in that 'group' or not.

Maybe I didn't make myself entirely clear. I AGREE with you that it's not right to use those words either within or outside the community. The little experiment with making them mainstream to kind of take the sting out of the original meaning just hasn't worked. They've retained their original ugliness.

I was trying to explain that anyone from outside the community is really getting into very deep trouble.

I certainly did not take offense nor did I call anyone a name unless you count "lefty" as namecalling but if you truly are a liberal it should not be considered offensive. I merely countered your potshot at me which was based upon personal innuendo rather than based upon any topical subject. By no means was I ofnded as a matter of fact I thought it was funny that you would resort to such tactics. I stand by my original post which basically says why are these things made into bigger issues than they should be? I'm far from worried that the Rutgers womans basketball team will be scarred or offended. We spend far too much time worrying about stupidity like this. Fact is that we as a society have grown far too politically correct and the particualrs of this case are further proof of this. I am not saying that I agree or disagree with those that are offended by Imus comments but those who believe in freedom of speech and other pillars of the constitution should stand up and say that people who say stupid things have rights too.

Go back and read what I said. I stand by my words.
I never mentioned your name nor called you one.
Freedom of speech does not include "hate speech", see FCC regs.
I agree that people that "stupid things" should have their say, and also be called out for their stupidity.
Apologies??? Later. "Resignation"? OK
Excuses...see my previous quote.
Justification? Nope!

I would hardly classify what he said as "hate speech". And if you stand by your words then why did you attempt to apologize? I have no problem with you but I think that people who turn bs like this into "racism" and "hate speech" are being petty and vindictive.
I'll say again, why can people call the president of the US names and say he is stupid and a criminal and it is ok but a shock jock says that a womans basketball team is nappy and thugish during a comedy bit and it is a criminal offense? Bill Maher and Bill O'Reilly both regularly say worse than this and no one pays attention.

I think Native Americans and Gays are bothered(or hurt) by these things, but I don't know where you start/stop rules about it.For one thing,we are terribly inconsistent about when we are outraged about comments about the way people are born.If it's wrong to say somebody is ugly, then why is it still o.k. to complain(or make fun of) the size of a man's penis,or a woman's chest? Imus is responsible for the show's content. In my opinion, he has let this Bernard character say stuff like this (with racial overtones) for far too long.I have always wondered how they got away with it.The audience knows he is playing a character(like CARROL O'CONNOR played.)THAT'S WHY THEY AREN'T OUTRAGED.They know the context of all this.I agree with Canon about most of this, but when it comes to issues concerning subjects where people have been harmed physically in the past(race, sexual orientation,) I can't say I agree.IMUS FCKED up pretty seriously.I understand that he is an entertainer, and playing a part.I understand the context of the show, but I think he is gunna get run. This was a mistake that he just can't make better. If it was just a comment about looks,or even sexual orientation, then I think he would survive.Fact is that he used the term "nappy- headed," and that is race specific, and I think it is gunna be curtains here.

Sure they do. People who say stupid things have the right to duck when someone who they've insulted punches them in the mouth.

All he does is find EVERYTHING wrong about sports...a chronic bitcher
but never knocks his own paper for some of the "crap" they have in it.

Video of Imus on Al Sharpton's "Fire Whitey Show"

I find it ironic that Reverend Assholeface didn't call for his idol James Brown to be fired when he beat his wife not one, but three times. Hypocrite racist bastard. Pot meet kettle, Sharpton.
