I think its so funny to go back and read the glowing reports on these horses just a day or so ago and then how they ran. I know, I for one was shocked, shocked I say, that Lava Man ran up the track! At least Kellys Landings can save face, after all those dang, "Kellys got a big butt" stories.

I'd have liked to hear his excuse if he hit the board.

There seems to be a long pattern with him--the further you ship him, the more lackluster he runs.

He was as outclassed as Enlish Chanel and Miesque's Approval, why aren't they being knocked? Lava Man is twice the horse they are.

**** Doug O’Neill said despite finishing last after stalking the pace in the Dubai Duty Free Saturday, Lava Man “looked fantastic” immediately after the race. “He scoped clean,” the trainer said. “We’ll regroup and revisit our thinking that we shouldn’t ship him out of town again, but we’ll get him home first and go from there.” *****

It sounds similar to the excuse that was used when Afleet Alex ran dead last in the Rebel Stakes, and was totally crushed by the immortal Greater Good. I believe he had a lung infection as opposed to a throat infection.

I don't remember what the excuse was when Holy Bull finished last beaten a city block in the Fountain of Youth, but I know it had something to do with his throat. I think Skip Away might have bled, when he ran last, beaten about 35 lengths in an allowance race during his 3-year-old season.

In all three cases, those horses went onto become dominant and very popular champions.

Obviously something was extremely wrong with Discreet Cat. He went 1:07.64, in hand, to the six furlong call in his last race---and has won many big figure sprints from the lead---yet, in a race with no pace at all, he was dead last early on...instead of loose on the lead. The pacesetter, who was making the 19th start of his career, had only had the lead at the pace call once in his entire career....and that race was 11 starts back. He was also exiting a 12 furlong race!!

I don't think anyone who's ever seen this horse run really believes something wasn't badly amiss with him physically.

DrugS welcome back we missed you.

I wonder if Discreet Cat will ever be totally healthy... seems the past few months have been no good to him. Maybe he is allergic to Dubai.

Thanks....it was awful nice of the mental institution to release me a little earlier than planned.

Discreet Cat ran very well in both Dubai races last year---he's also a true speed horse, which means he's tailor-made for that speed friendly track over there. I doubt Dubai or the track had anything to do with his showing.

He either has a throat infection like they say---or, to use a Serlingisim, he went, in a matter of a few months, from being a total superstar to not being able to outrun me and Cannon Shell in a horse suit.

On TVG Sunday, Frank Lyons said it was a foot abscess for Discreet Cat. Is Frankie being irresponsible with the rumor spreading or are there multiple excuses flowing out of the desert?

You know, these horses aren't machines. They are allowed to have a bad race from time to time. If Kobe goes 3-20 and scored 6 pts then it is just an off night. If Pujols goes 0-12 then it is a slump. If Peyton Manning goes 11-30 with 2 picks then it is good defense or an off night. Horses have off days every now and then. Give Discreet Cat a break. The horse throws in one clunker and we all need to find some excuse. There might be a valid or there might not be one. Either case, he has proven to be a top quality race horse.

Now Lava Man is a different story because you have a pattern of not being able to ship. The answer as to why he runs bad in races outside of Cali is because he doesnt ship well. That is his excuse. The sooner his owners realize this the better off the racing world will be.

I don't think people are directly blaming the horse.. But there does seem to be a consistent pattern of excuses that emerge after supposed star horses run up the track in a big race.
