Actually, it is a suckling foal just after birth, since it is still nursing. Only after it has left its mummy in the late summer or early fall and is no longer nursing (ie weaned) is a foal called a weanling.

Thanks for correcting me on the verbiage. I thought a weanling simply met the horse was less than one year old.

I like the term suckling---I'll have to try and use it a little now.

Last year, someone on ESPN had posted all of the derby winners and what month they were born in. I know that May foals have not typically done well.
