vetting? is that like having a mechanic look at the car before you buy it?

I don't understand why you pay $24k for a horse that could have been claimed for $15 or $20k. I don't see any downside other than that and I admit I don't understand. I'm just happy to be part of it (even if it is a very small part.)

Thanks again !

Vetting means full x-rays and scoping. Claiming a horse without doing any of that is much, much riskier. There could be plenty of chips and airway problems present that you'd never know about in a claimer.

Default Vetting

AE,

That's probably a pretty good analogy. Others surely know a lot more than me, but when you claim one for 15 or 20K you pay less for the horse but you might be getting one with hidden problems that require it to take a break from racing for awhile or altogether. Especially a horse that has been dropped signigicantly in class over it's career. I'm a novice when it comes to claiming and ownership, but it's just like anything else. You get what you pay for. If I pay a little more for the assurance that a horse will have the best chance possible of remaining sound, who cares? I could've claimed one for 15K and it never run well again. To me, clearly, it's best (unless you have THE scoop on a particular horse prior to claiming) to pay a little more for peace of mind knowing your horse is one that can compete given the proper preparation (ie. Chuck's job) before a race.

Chuck, did you see anything in this horse's disposition that made her attractive to you as a trainer? Or was it like Steve said mostly a decision based on the horse's pedigree and potential to be a good broodmare?

Ae,

The claim price and what the prior owner was looking for in the sale were basically around the same thing. The owner had her in for $15,000 figuring she wins and gets claimed or in for $20,000 with a good chance to finish in the money and get claimed:

$15,000 tag + 60% winner share of $11,000 purse ($6,600) = $21,600

$20,000 tag + 60% winner share of $17,000 purse ($10,200) = $30,200
$20,000 tag + 20% second share of $17,000 purse ($3,400) = $23,400
$20,000 tag + 10% third share of $17,000 purse ($1,700) = $21,700

Price she went for in the sale = $24,000

In reality, he gets around what he was looking to sell Sumwon for, which was a little north of $20,000. We wanted to spend $22,000, but Chuck wasn't going to let that extra $2,000 stop us. By buying her at the sale we paid about 10%-15% more than her exact value, but that was a premium worth paying given the chance to have her vetted and given that Chuck felt she perfectly fits our needs.

PLUS, recognize that had we tried to get her in the claim box, we would likely have had to win a shake for her afterwards because we probably wouldn't have been the only stable putting in a claim on her...

Hope this helps you understand the way this worked and how it plays out in the game with things like this... Part of what we are trying is show people the inner workings of the game and this is a particularly good example of some of what goes on...

Default replays

I wanted to watch her previous races, so I got on racereplays and queried her name...why isn't Mountaineer on there?!!??! Geez. Where can we get Mountaineer replays? I think I can get them on tvg, but I don't log in to tvg at work. Anywhere else I can get them that's not a wagering site?

I seem to remember someone stating that you could watch them on calracing.com, but I can't get that website to pull up right now.

Hickory,

I think the reason our new buddy posted that was so that we could all say "phew!" and breathe a sigh of relief that we can all now FINALLY stop arguing about that fateful $3.9 million claiming race that Lava Man got swooped out of!

What a steal at that value!

My mistake...sorry
That post was deleted anyway.
I guess I overreacted with the other "party crashers" on this thread.

And it seems that Hail to Reason is gone???

Did she arrive at Chuck's barn today and if so, did anybody take any pictures of her?

Default Wrong Lead

Guys,

I hate to be Captain Obvious, but Sumwon is always on her wrong lead turning home and down the stretch. I think if it weren't for that she'd have a couple, maybe three, wins right now. Am I wrong? Especially that Mountaineer photo.

What does a trainer do make a horse get on the right lead?

She arrived late morning in good shape. Since the weather is so bad we probably wont do much with her this week. My track vet will go over her tomorrow to get a feel for her and we will do some rountine blood work also. Hopefully we can get a dentist to do some work on her teeth this week. We will get her shoes changed this weekend and she may do some track work on Saturday or Sunday. Steve is in the process of setting something up so that we can keep everyone informed. Honestly there is not alot of info to share on a daily basis but I will do my best.

I am TOTALLY happy with the selection.

I only found out about the start-up of the Dee Tee Stables last month, and I thought, when am I ever going to get a chance like this again? To be one of the owners of the first horse selected? To get an education on another aspect of horseracing, and still have the potential to make money, or buy another horse? I love reading what gets posted on this website, the good and the BS. When I am a little more informed in my opinions, I hope to post more myself (right now, there's just a little bit too much luck involved).

Crystal clear. I am very excited. Sorry if I come across otherwise.

Hopefully she takes to Fairgrounds. Horses for courses and all.

Looking at her pedigree, looks like the intent was to put speed (Came Home) with staying power (Mysterious Moll)
