While I dont like Jazil's chances at the win today, I would give him far better than zero chance at the win.

I dont really agree that he is overrated. I dont think hes a great horse by any means (and i may be way off for saying so) but I wouldnt call him overrated. I do agree he won the Belmont against one of the worst triple crown fields assembled in recent history, but I think most people also see that. Barbaro and Bernardini were clearly heads and shoulders above the rest of the 3 year olds and their not being in this race really took the excitement out of it. Bluegrass Cat was no world beater and he was the only other horse who really did any running in this strange race.

I think Jazil gets the respect he deserves but certainly not a ton more.

The Belmont field in 2000 was infinitely worse than the Belmont in 2006. That slobberknocker won by Commendable was like a N1X Allowance race. I guess it had some similarities to the 2006 Belmont, but at least it didn't take Jazil an eternity to get around the Belmont oval like it did Commendable.

I thought both fields were horribly weak for a Triple Crown race. I'll give Bluegrass Cat credit, he did run an awesome race in the haskell. I was blown away by that race and rank it 3rd behind the Derby and Preakness for the best performances by 3 year olds this year. But Todd Pletcher horses do that frequently, run races that absolutely wow you. Who knows what could have come of Bluegrass Cat had he stayed healthy? Still wouldnt consider him all that much off of one very good performance.

I think the field Afleet Alex defeated in his Belmont victory was less stellar as well.

Jazil's time actually compares quite well with the times of the Belmonts from the past ten years. It was faster than Editor's Note, Touch Gold, Victory Gallop, Commendable, Sarava, Empire Maker, and Afleet Alex. It was right around the time for Birdstone and Lemon Drop Kid. The only one significantly faster in the prior ten years was Point Given. I'm not really sure where the whole idea that the race was so slow comes from. The Beyer figure came in low but it was just a made up figure anyways since most years that is the only race run at Belmont around two turns.

Guess who was eligible for a NW1X when they ran the Belmont last year? That's right, Jazil. I do agree the 2000 running was hideously bad but last years running was nothing to write home about.

JJP,

Multiple horses were eligible for N1X in the 2000 Belmont, including the favorite Aptitude. Toss in Wheelaway, Commendable, I think, and a few others. Unshaded wasn't because of the Lexington, Hugh Hefner wasn't because of a Cal-bred win, and I can't remember who else was in the field. I know I was six deep in the Pick 6 but I wouldn't have ever used Commendable.

You're correct in this except that Cal-bred wins don't count against OPEN N1X conditions... so technically, Hugh Hefner was also eligible for N1X.

That's correct Phil, hey what do you think of Panty Raid today? She should destroy them at about 2/5 in my opinion.

Watch out for Early Vintage.

i'll guess she goes off at 9/5 or so. this is a pretty decent N1X, i'd be afraid of Silver Knockers. Sniper likes Early Vintage...

I wouldn't be surprised if she runs well today but gets beat. First start off a 7 month layoff, and there's bigger prizes down the road for a filly that could potentially be the best of her birthyear (and i mean that legitimately.)
