I have often wondered why trainers do not attempt races like the Illinois Derby, Ohio Derby etc etc with their top fillies. Those fields are usually weak or only have 1 major contendar.

That's what I would do. Usually, trainers try it once and if they lose, they give up. They should do like Lukas did with Serena's Song. I believe she won the Jim Beam early, lost the Derby and then won the Haskell later.

As Danzig said, fillies run against males all the time everywhere else in the world except here. It's really not as big a deal as people make it to be.

Also, this year's 3yo's don't seem to be that good of a group to me. I can't think of a single one that would scare me off if I had a good colt or filly at this point. The only ones that would cause me any concern are Nobiz and maybe Any Given Saturday. As we all know, so much can happen and change between now and Derby day so I'd at least point her to the race. Take a route with races facing males earlier. If she fails, she could always fall back to female races in time for the Oaks.

depends on how she runs. genuine risk ran third in the wood behind plugged nickel. that showed she belonged. the rest is history.
what the heck, half (or more) of the colts who run each year don't belong, certainly the top two year old filly would have more of a compelling argument for belonging than some of the others!

Lady's Secret ran well against the boys back in the day.

There have been worse fillies who have faced the boys.

She's already faced them and beaten them, so that's definitely a mark in her favor, as all the other female Derby winners ran against colts before Derby Day.

For the past few years, everyone has talked about the BCJ Fillies winner taking on the colts (Storm Flag Flying, Halfbridled, Sweet Catomine, etc) and it never panned out, so let's not get our knickers in a twist yet, saying that Dreaming of Anna is going to be ruined when we don't even know what her first race is going to be.

the thing to remember to, for those who follow chicago racing with any regularity, is that Catalano is the trainer he is, and has the percentage he has because he spots his horses realistically. Many of his horses would show up in AOC races for many other trainers, but he'll drop them right back into claimers to get a win.

With that in mind, if they think Anna's got any shot (ie she races well this Spring), I've got to think they would send her there. But knowing how Catalano spots his horses, even with Calabrese breathing down his neck, I would be hard pressed to think they'd throw her to the wolves just for the sake of doing it. If she shows well this Spring, I imagine they'd send her, and if she's done well this Spring -- they'd have every reason to.

(have no idea how i ended up posting this in another thread!)

When you see a horse spotted wrong for that stable rest assured Calabrese's ego has gotten in the way AGAIN. Catalano, didnt place Anna up at Woodbine, they got rained out of Calabrese's spot. I dont remember which stake, if you said it I would know. Anyway it rained and they were forced into a better spot. Calabrese had already entered the wrong spot, lucky for them they got rained out and went with Levings choice.

exactly so....

fillies face colts quite often everywhere but here. it doesn't hurt them to run against colts.
