There are maidens and then again there are maidens, so you need to clarify which maiden races one is talking about. There is such a difference in the excitement generated by a maiden special weight for 2 year olds at Saratoga, from which an unraced future champion might emerge, and a maiden claimer $15,000 for State breds at, say, Hawthorne, in which the betting favorite has already run 9 times and hit the board 3 or 4. I'd tire of a steady diet of the latter very rapidly.
