ride was awful..mario had to clock, no concept of how fast..not only through the opening quarter either. Saw the .22 and knew it was game over. Second fastest opening quarter in preakness history...

On the NBC feed you can see Mario Guitierrez look at Fernando Perez on the backstretch as if to say why are you taking me wide and dueling with me up front?

Probably payback from some incident at Hastings a few years ago when they were both there. Nothing like sweet revenge on the grandest stage.

I think the camp knew Nyquist would not like taking mud kickback so they sent him.

Andy Beyer eviscerated Doug O’Neill and Mario Gutierrez for their tactics in on the radio show this morning.

I get not wanting kickback but why not simply put him in 2nd..angled out or hugging the rail opposite the pace setter?

Understand, but nobody expects to go 22 and change. Even if one of the other speeds goes and they are 23.0, it may have been a good tactic. Look how close they were to a Derby pace that looked "too fast".

You saw the 22 and knew it was game over? Did you think it was game over when you saw the 22 in the Kentucky Derby?

22 at Pimlico is faster than 22 at CD

I believe Timeform had the first half mile virtually identical in both the preakness and the derby.

I'm.mobile so I'm not gonna bring up the derby replay but if I recall there wasn't a "duel" for 3/4 of mile in the derby? I could be totally wrong though. I think pointman is 100x smarter then me when it comes to handicapping but I think raw times don't mean as much as how they got to that number..if the numbers were the same at cd and pim personally I think the pim number was much more taxing..so maybe I'm contradicting myself by saying .22 game over and its more like .22 and dueling leaders game over.

I throw a big party for the derby, get all hammered and don't get to really dissect the race so maybe I'm blowing smoke here lol
