Fastest Filly Ever...

Hi. I'm new to this board and hence I am sorta late in getting in my thoughts on this thread.

Melair was talked about in depth, so I won't go over her again. Akinemod was briefly mentioned, and I believe that before all of her physical ailments got to her, she was cut out to be an all time great filly.

The absolute ease with which she would gallop out on the lead with other pure blazers was something astonishing to watch. I believe in her second to last start before the nearly two year layoff, she was in a three horse speed duel with two high quality speed fillies. One was Linda Card, and I've forgotten the other one now. She was in the middle, and while the two on her inside and outside were being hard ridden, it looked like Akinemod was in a breezing workout. She easily put them away and waltzed home in about 121.

She then stretched out for the first time in her next start, which I think was the 2nd leg of the la brea series. She won that by something like 18 lengths in 140 or 141 for 8.5f. The track was off that day as well, which Neil Drysdale cited as the reason for scratching Gorgeous from the race. Personally, I felt the reason was that he knew he couldn't touch Akinemod with that great and well named monster filly of his.

Some other ones I didnt see mentioned would be Sharp Cat (once she put it all together) and Winning Colors, prior to her assasination attempt in the Preakness by Woody Stephens and Pat Day.

Lakeway, in her 2nd or 3rd start of her life, I think in January of her 3yo season ran the same distance on the same card as the previous years sprint champ, Cardmania. Lakeway, in an easy win, ran about .05 to .1 seconds slower than the hard nosed veteran did just a couple of races apart. I knew watching her that day I was watching a freakish superstar in the making.

I believe she was the most gifted filly of that crop, which included, besides her, sardula, phone chatter, inside information and heavenly prize.

For lovers of pure speed, there was a turf sprinter based in socal in the 90s. I cant remember her name, but she was by gone west out of a minstrel mare. i believe she was a frankel/judd filly. She wasnt the greatest filly ever, but it was quite a sight watching her get 5 going down the hill every time.

If you want to count final times as fast, then on turf you'd have to mention miesque. Also on turf, a filly that didnt have any early speed but had an insane turn of foot was the extremely underrated mare toussaud, best known for her success in the shed.

If she'd have had her head on straight, people would have remembered her as a great racemare as well.

You left out a freaky Donny Von Hemel filly (and famous broodmare) from that crop named Mariah's Storm.

She won her debut by 13 lengths, in hand, at the old Ak Sar Ben racetrack. Won a Grade 2 stake by her 3rd lifetime start. She ran in the Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland in her 4th lifetime start, was bet to 3/1, and broke her leg.

She actually returned to the races 10 months later after her scary breakdown, and won a Grade 3 stake with a 103 Beyer! In her very next start she won a stake at Arlington Park by 14 lengths, totally in hand, and earned a 109 Beyer. The 2nd place finisher in that race was a 4-time Stakes winner named Bayou Plans, who was also the dam of Grade 1 winner Midas Eyes.

Of course, the highlight of Mariah's Storm's carrer on the race track was her 5 1/2 length victory, in hand, over "the most consistantly good horse in the last 30 years" Serena's Song. Mariah's Storm earned a 120 Beyer figure in that victory. Which, I believe equals the highest Beyer figure ever run by a filly, at a route distance, since they started publishing them in the racing form.

Mariah's Storm was 10-of-16 lifetime starts....and the movie Dreamer was supposedly loosely based on her story. From those who've seen the movie, I hear VERY loosely based. Mariah's Storm is also famously the dam of Giant's Causeway.

That crop of fillies foaled in '91 was, in my opinion, the best crop I've ever seen by far....and Inside Information, was the most brilliant filly I've seen during my time and absolutely belongs in the Hall of Fame.

hard to even call that movie very loosely based...apart from being plain awful it was completely unbelievable.

but you've got to remember that it wasn't made for racing fans -- it was made for little girls.

the little girl watching the movie gets to be the hero when she watches it.

they obviously took enough liberties with the believability that they had to have known they were not making it for the racing community.

think 98% Disney, 2% documentary.

I saw it just for the song that rolled during the credits

Matter of fact, I believe I may be the only person ever to walk out of the latter. Everyone else seems to love it, I left halfway through I was so mortified by how bad it was.

I'm with you, I actually hated the Royal Tenenbaums. And I normally love Wes Anderson.

As for the Other Sister, well, I'm just impressed to see you work that one into any conversation.

Great Choice

Yeah she was very nice filly for Von Hemel. She completley destroyed
every filly in the mid west. One of my favorite mid west jockeys
rode her for awhile Bobby Lester. She also has produced productive
NY stallion Freud and Roar of The Tiger.

on straight, people would have remembered her as a great racemare as well.

Agree with you on Lakeway... prior to her illness, she was one hell of a nice horse.

I loved Heavenly Prize...it's nice to think she was that much better (7 lths) than Lakeway.... but something had to be hindering Lakeway that day.

Agreed. She was laid up after that race, I think, and never the same.

Plus 1 1/4 was probably not her best game. When she was good, though, she was exceptional.

Well for one thing that was the last summer where Lasix wasn't legal!!
And Jones never won a stakes race at the Spa, just like many other Cali trainers back in those days where the lack of Lasix and "whatever else" left their horses "just not the same" as they were in Cali.
