This is an interesting discussion. If I was in charge I would, honestly, question whether or not $40 for valet is still too low.
Lone Star charged $20 to park on July 4th and there were 20,000 people there. That certainly puts a dent in their fireworks bill (which were spectacular, by the way) and because it's not a gambling dollar, they don't have to split that with any groups. For many racetracks, where on-track attendance has dwindled (and not because of parking costs on special days like this) capturing as much of the wallet as possible is critical. I don't blame them for making as much money as possible to where the demand approves. On New Year's Eve, the biggest night of the year for most casinos, not just anyone can use valet. They reserve it for their elite players. It's just business. We had honest conversations about charging admission at LAD for Super Derby Day, even though it was free the rest of the year. There's a lot there that makes sense. |

I dont care if its the going rate in the northeast. $20-40 for parking is bs and that money could be churned over inside the venue multiple times over with the customer being satisfied and the track getting there cut.

Even if Monmouth received 100% of the takeout (forgetting all taxes and purse agreements etc.), each car parked would have to churn ~$117 off the $20 to offset the pure revenue of the parking. Given the casual nature of the crowd on Haskell Day, that would be highly unlikely. Also unlikely is, when seeing the Triple Crown winner, people will be dissatisfied because of a $20 parking fee.

What happens in an unlikely scenario where AP loses the Haskell? Do the fans rip the place down? It could happen. I was there when I believe it was the
Long Branch and the odds on favorite broke a rein going into the first turn. Horse and rider went right and out of the race. The fans went ballistic where the announcer had to explain what happen before a riot ensued. ![]() |

Here's a tip from a 20 year Haskell veteran. Take route 71 and park in either sections 83-84 or higher. You're close to the gate. It's sort of like Belmont Day. Paid the $30 made a quick left under the tree and went right out. It's worth the walk and you're right by the exit.
