Tradition doesn't matter much in this day and age, and Bama is almost 15 years removed from a championship. Top college coaches used to shuffle around from job to job looking for pay raises. No, they just give you a raise at the school you coach at and keep you.
Rodriguez has life made where he is. He coaches the power team in the Big East, he has total fan and media support, and he can sit and wait for a plum job opportunity to come along.
I'm old enough to remember when people said Alabama, you thought immediately of powerhouse football team. Over the last few years all I think of when I hear Alabama is a team with no offense who goes nowhere.
I don't the Bama faithful and alumni realize this yet. They are mistaken if they think they are going to snap their fingers and get an established star coach there. Perhaps they could lure a has been star coach, or someone looking for a job who used to be a star, but its not gonna be easy to lure anyone there who is already a star. When you get a shot to move up from a good gig, you wanna make sure that move is to a GREAT job, and I don't think Rodriguez or anyone else is gonna consider Bama a great job.
They need to swallow their pride and look for a young guy on the way up! A guy who has star potential who can be hired. It would also help them to start fresh with a new first time coach who could build a new image there.
Maybe a guy who will try and actually throw the ball.
I'd start looking at NFL assistant coaches.

They had bad coaches after Holtz. And lo and behold they went out and got an NFL assistant, kinda like Im suggesting here.

Where did they play last year?

Texas & Oklahoma had huge gaps between national titles, especially Texas
ND refuses to join a conference, plays all the service academies
and then gets annually violated in a "big" bowl game
we lost to a tough LSU team by 14 in Baton Rouge

The great Irish have an exclusive TV deal they would have to forgeo if they joined a conference. I think they like the cash, its called smart business.
They have the guy with the hardware onhis fingers now, and the best Qb in the high school nation coming in, as well as 11 already signed top 100 guys!!! Number one recruiting class according to ESPN as well.
I think they have things in order.
Bama should look at pro coaches in trouble, and asst pro coaches. Maybe Romeo will free up, I doubt he likes Cleveland much these days.

let me just ask you this, if UA were not a great job then why are we getting all of these coaches raises & renovations? If a lesser program came calling a prudent AD would not have budged an inch!

they were ready to make RR one of the highest paid coaches in college football~can other programs put a coach in the top 5 paid w/o having
coached a game there? few
plus the have better facilities than most NFL teams
and a 92,000 seat stadium
with the right coach, we'd have recriuts lining up at the door
and all the SEC teams you mentioned only passed us up
when the NCAA handed us the stiffest probabtion ever aside from
the death penalty, and we STILL remained competitive with all those teams
the bottom line is you get comfortable where you are
and Rita, the wife, didn't want to move from the hills

I think they felt comfy there, and if another job calls in the east, he will take it someday.
Just like the Rutgers coach. hes got it made now, he told Miami not interested.
Quite frankly I think they both want the Penn St job as Joe Pa nears retiremnet. And Florida St will be open soon enough as well.
I think those jobs are more appealing and you can put me down hard for a big bet on a RR/Schiano exacta box on the Florida St Penn St jobs when they open up.

Facilities, I have to laugh at this comment, the beat writer for University of Cincinnati Football who covered Georgia and spent time at Alabama, commented that the UC facilities were as good or better than Georgia and Alabama, we're talking about a middle of the road Big East School, this job is not what you think...
