Obviously it is a character from both the novel and the movie, but I have to believe that far more people know the character through the movie than the book. The movie is widely considered one of the greatest movies of all time. Puzo's novel is not considered one of the greatest pieces of literature, nor should it be.
So if, for some reason, I had to pick one or the other, I would call Corleone a movie character. Huck Finn, on the other hand, I would call a literary character, despite the fact that there have been several movies made featuring the character.
