I've actually thought of the same scenario you talk about..but.......
the fact of not being able to see the horses or the odds before each individual race is what gives these type of bets the most value. If, say a maiden 10:1 shot was bet down to 3-1 you might get 10 - 15 : 1 on your horizontal wager. but if everyone got to see the action, you are sure to get 4-6:1.. and there are many other nuances to it as well i am sure .
