Four-time grade I winner My Flag died at the Hancock family's Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky., after foaling a healthy bay colt by Bernardini on April 12.

Bred and raced by Ogden Phipps, the 21-year-old broodmare was a product of two Phipps champions, by Easy Goer and out of the undefeated champion and Hall of Fame mare Personal Ensign.

One of the leading fillies of her generation, My Flag won six races and placed seven times in 20 starts, earning more than $1.5 million. Among her victories were the grade I Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Ashland Stakes, Coaching Club American Oaks, and Gazelle Handicap, and grade II Bonnie Miss Stakes.

As a broodmare, My Flag produced champion 2-year-old filly Storm Flag Flying (by Storm Cat), who followed in her dam's footsteps by winning the 2002 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

My Flag is additionally the dam of graded stakes-placed On Parade (by Storm Cat), who produced dual graded stakes winner Parading (by Pulpit); stakes winner With Flying Colors (by A.P. Indy); and stakes-placed Leading the Parade (by A.P. Indy). In all, she produced five winners from seven starters, for total progeny earnings of $2,304,599.

"My Flag was a pleasure to be around," said Bradley Purcell of Claiborne. "She was a Breeders' Cup champion and champion broodmare...it's not very often you have that combination together. We were very fortunate to take care of My Flag and she will be missed.

"She's got a nice yearling (Sound the Trumpets, by Bernardini) and had a nice baby, so she has a couple more chances to carry on the tradition for her."

My Flag, a half sister to grade I winners Miner's Mark and Traditionally, has been buried at Claiborne.
