Default From the organization that does everything wrong..

..comes news of the Hirsch Jacobs Stakes being renamed in honor of Chick Lang.

Congratulations to the Maryland Jockey Club... American Sports most inept organization on this new low. Nice timing too as the Jacobs family celebrates the 40th anniversary of 1970 Horse of the Year Personality winning the Preakness. They are also marking 40 years since the passing of the Hall of Fame family patriarch Hirsch himself.

Never have I seen a sport so oblivious to the value of its' own history.

Will it be named the Chick Lang Sr. to distinguish it from the Chick Lang Jr. stakes run at Retama?

C'mon Steve, what race did you want them to rename?

The Dupont Distaff? Oh wait, that one has been canceled.

The Maryland Sprint Handicap? This one is steep in history and celebrates...um..... Maryland and....um.... Sprint, right? Can't change that one. No sir.

The William Donald Schaefer?

Given it is named after that great MD Governor who didn't do anything for racing, had no connection with racing, but once swam with the seals at the Baltimore Aquarium - you really didn't expect MJC to do that, did you?

Every day it gets worse, doesn't it......

They should run the Jim McKay on Preakness Day.

If they thought so much of him they should have named a stakes race for him when he was alive.

Well, on that topic, most racing authorities do not actually allow events named for living persons. NYRA went against tradition when they wanted to add Joe Hirsch's name to the Turf Classic while he was still alive and could appreciate it.

The travesty in this MJC fiasco is that if they had suggested to Chick Lang renaming the Hirsch Jacobs in his honor, he'd have told them absolutely not to under any condition. Lang would be mortified to know they did this.

I hope you like tuna fish sandwiches and Kool-aid......

You know, you REALLY got off lucky this year. In past years the workman's comp part of your license fee would be around $300. This year, we lucked out and it is only about $50.

I'll probably be near the clubhouse bar - can you bring me sandwich around 3. I should be hungry by then.

Best of luck to you guys - I'll be rooting for you!!!!
