Janikowski 61 yard field goal......rule question?
Link for replay below... http://nfl.fanhouse.com/team/cleveland-browns Given that the only time a field goal is made from this distance it is a line drive with low flying trajectory, is it within the rules of the game to put a defender at the cross bar to deflect the ball as it passes. It seems that this ball cleared by no more than 6-12 inches which for these guys is the equivalent of grabbing the rim of a basket since they are both 10 feet high. I know you cannot use another players back to hurl yourself over the line of scrimmage but can you block a ball at the point it clears a cross bar and upright. |

anything to keep 3pts off the board. think of the lift that would have been going in to the locker-room.

You either try hard for the push to block it, since its most likely going to be a line drive, or Mangini should had Cribbs waiting back there just in case it was short.

I think you probably have a better chance of knocking a ball over that might be a tad short (going to hit the bar), then to actually knock down or block a ball going over.

Didn't some team back in the 70's try to sign Andre the Giant just for this reason?? Think it was the Skins.

When will a hockey team sign one of these 900lbers to be a goalie. Just fill the damn thing up with pads and fat. Wouldn't even need the stick.

The missed field goal returns were a regular part of the game before they moved the goalposts from the front of the endzone to the back in 1974.
Teams posted a return man in the endzone nearly every FG attempt. |

A field goal can only be blocked @ the line of scrimmage per NFL rules.

So you can't jump up and field the ball at the crossbar? |

I remember seeing that as a kid. In think it was the St Louis Cardnials that have someone back on a long FG attpt to try to block it at the crossbar. The player missed timed his jump and knocked the ball thru the uprights. |
