LOL

So we now just selectively choose what races and years that are the true measure of a horse?

He was very good as a two year old.
Best pal was a pretty good three year old who ran well in a few big races
As a 4 year old he had a great spring
The rest of career was hit or miss, losing an awful lot to a lot of ordinary horses.

He wasn't exactly John Henry

For those of us to young to remember any of John Henry's career ... Best Pal was very unique and one hell of a horse when he was on his game before injury and old age caught up... and pretty solid there after.

In other matters .... Cannon ... would you care to guess at my current facebook status...

Best Pal would have never been beat at Jefferson Downs as a 2-year-old ... nor missed the exacta nine straight times at Fairgrounds as a 3yo.

John Henry was as one of a kind as any horse during my lifetime ... shame I missed it all.

Hey Chucky, don't forget, not very many nice horses get to wait till they are almost four to make their debut.

I'm pretty sure had Z raced as heavily as BP did through her 4yo season, she'd have lost to many ordinary horses.

That was quite the impressive victory over Anabaa's Creation, I'll give you that!

Best Pal would never have been at JD as a 2yo.

Compared to the "new" Jefferson Downs (the old one was destroyed by a hurricane), the "old" Fair Grounds looked like Hialeah. JD was a bullring dump, but it had its charms.

A bias against Cal racing in regards to a horse from California vs another horse from California?

I'm more likely to say he's just yanking our chains.

He can't really be that much of a smooth operator.

if american racing has historically been dirt and turf, why are some so quick to annoint greatness to a horse who has made 2 starts on one of the surfaces we determine greatness on? i know people want to say synthetics are here and i agree, they are.

tennis seems like a good analogy here. rafael nadal is the best clay court player, maybe ever. but, hes also beat the best on grass and hard court. so far zenyatta has beaten the equine quivalent of james blake on dirt and people want to compare her to rod laver.
I wouldn't object to people calling her the greatest horse of the synthetics era, this discussion has many layers, supposing she ran only on dirt and won those 17 races in a row, many would still question what she has beaten? I believe if she were able to capture the BCC this fall, one would have to be forced to look at her as one of the greatest in the game. I'm not sure what the naysayer would say then, but seeing how many do not want to put her in that select group, I'm sure something trivial will be produced, even if she answers the only question left in her career, beating males on dirt in the toughest dirt race in the world.

I don't think any of Parcells' teams were playing against the NAIA 90% of the time.

I guess Zenyatta needs to fly back east 3 or 4 times this year. That would be a really smart way to get her to peak on BC day, just keep flying her back and forth from California to the east coast.
Some New York horses do go the Monmouth and Delaware. That's traveling isn't it?
