Default Silky Sullivan

Silky Sullivan died on this day in 1977. His spectacular closing speed made his name a lexicon for come-from-behind performances, and his popularity helped revolutionize television sports coverage forever.

During the 1958 Kentucky Derby, CBS decided to broadcast the race using a split screen for the first time, with one camera dedicated to Silky. He had come from thirty lengths back to win the Santa Anita Derby, and eleven days previous he had come from forty-one lengths behind to win a 6 ˝ furlong sprint race. The network wanted every step of the huge chestnut colt from California to be covered.

Silky was so popular he continued to make appearances at both Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields for the rest of his life. He is buried in the infield at Golden Gate where the Silky Sullivan Handicap is held annually.
