H. Allen Jerkens passes away at 85
RIP to a legend. Possibly the greatest trainer of all-time and one of the most influential people in thoroughbred history. Condolences to the Jerkens family and everyone who knew him personally.

A truly great trainer and better human being, gave every one a chance. Although i dont go back as far as some of you,bu i was at Saratoga for the Test and Alabama won by Society Selection. 3 weeks apart;

There won't come another Chief. A man greater than the sum of the accolades ever directed at his horsemanship & humanity.
It's been a privilege for all of us as players and fans to have been able to witness whatever portion of Allen Jerkens' career we have. Deepest sympathies to daughter Julie, surrogate daughter Leah Gyarmati, sons Jimmy, Steven, 'the 3rd Jerkens son' Chuck Simon, the grandchildren and the extended legion of racetrackers that Chief guided though life.

Condolences to his family and friends. It was always a special treat to be at Saratoga when he won a Graded Stake.
I didn't know this until today, but what a day he had when Devil His Due won the Wood Memorial.

Can picture myself as a teen seated in my grandmother's kitchen back in Queens, NY pouring over the following day's Daily Racing Form back in the 1970's..."the Golden Age of Thoroughbred Racing"...when there were many outstanding horsemen (and there were)........
the only question that she would ask me time and time again..... "Does Allen Jerkens have any horses entered tomorrow?" RIP, Chief.......

I can remember one day in particular. The chief had won the feature with some hoss with stickers that paid like $20 or something. Gene (the CID ) had made a nice score since he always bet the chiefs hoss'. He was extolling his virtues in an extra loud, (even for him) diatribe. He was in CID form. (Called In Drunk). You could tell that he genuinely loved the guy. It was beautiful to watch. Mr. Jerkins gave him the thumbs up on the way by. It was just such a Saratoga moment. If you've ever exited the track past the fountain, you've probably heard Gene. RIP Chief

Way back in the early 70s, he had a sprinter named Raise a King who had bad legs, would only run every few months, but Allen would get him ready and he would fire....just one of many amazing training jobs he did over the years.....I will miss this guy!

"Jerkens was born on April 21, 1929, in Islip, N.Y. He was enthralled with horses from the start, beginning to compile a scrapbook of his favorites when he was in kindergarten. I remember not too long ago, when they still had racing on Television on Saturday, when Randy Moss used to pick a Budweiser long shot of the race. This day he picked Shine Again, who was double digits. She blew them away! I still have the video of the race and Mr. Jerkens in the winner circle

RIP Mr. Jerkens.
It was the fall of 1984 and he trained a speedball named Up Pops Awinner for Hobeau. I had an affinity for cheap speed and was thinking about making a small wager. Given that the horse almost always gave up the ghost in the lane I asked him what he thought of his chances. He said "I've tried everything with him, blinkers on, blinkers off, on the lead, off the pace, I'm ready to give up on him. Naturally Up Pops Awinner runs off and hides. Wins for fun. Walking back through the tunnel we make eye contact and Mr. Jerkens looks at me with curious grin and says "whatta ya know about that".
