Keeneland September: New-look Book 1 yields soaring returns
By Joe Nevills

A full sister to Grade 1 winner Cupid sold to the Coolmore partnership for $2.7 million to lead the revamped Book 1 of the Keeneland September yearling sale.

A revamped, super-select first book of the Keeneland September yearling sale yielded the intended result on Monday, with average and median sale prices far exceeding last year’s Book 1, and a $2.7-million daughter of Tapit becoming the most expensive filly traded at the sale since 2008.

Keeneland condensed Book 1 of the 2017 auction to a single session with 167 elite yearlings cataloged before outs. Last year’s first book spanned three sessions with 607 entries.

Monday’s boutique session saw 95 horses change hands for revenues of $54,175,000. The Book 1 average sale price finished at $570,263, rising 64 percent from last year’s final Book 1 average of $347,471. The Book 1 median price grew 67 percent to $500,000 from $300,000. The buyback rate finished at 34 percent, compared with last year’s cumulative Book 1 figure of 31 percent.

“It by far exceeded our expectations,” Bob Elliston, Keeneland’s vice president of racing and sales, said. “We had a couple of goals in this new format. First and foremost was creating momentum right from the very beginning that we hope we can take right through the entire sale. The second one is have as many good horses as you can for this international buying group before the [sale’s dark day Friday].

“The fireworks are not over, I promise you that,” he continued. “It was hard getting a horse bought here tonight. There were a lot of folks that went home without orders filled, and these breeders are bringing incredible horses back for the next three days [of Book 2].”

At the top of the market, three horses sold for more than $2 million, leading eight horses who changed hands for seven figures. A total of 48 horses sold for $500,000 or more.

That doesn't even count the 7-figure RNAs. I know the full brother to Shared Belief RNA'd for $1.9 million and the Tapit-Serena's Cat colt RNA'd for $1.05 million. The latter had a full sister sell for $3 million so that was curious.

KEE Sept: Trio of seven-figure colts leads cracking session
By Joe Nevills. DRF

A colt from the final crop of Scat Daddy sold for $1.1 million to M.V. Magnier of the Coolmore partnership to lead Wednesday's session at the Keeneland September yearling sale. He was one of three yearlings sold for seven figures on the day.

The level of competition among buyers at Book 2 of the Keeneland September yearling sale jumped to the next level on Wednesday, featuring a trio of seven-figure transactions.

Wednesday’s session was the second of three comprising the bellwether auction’s Book 2 as part of an overhauled catalog. Books 1 and 2 of this year’s renewal are arranged with an ultra-select, single-session first book followed by three Book 2 sessions before the auction’s traditional dark day. By comparison, last year’s sale featured a three-day Book 1, followed by the dark day, then two Book 2 sessions.

At the end of Wednesday’s trade, a total of 194 yearlings changed hands for revenues of $47,018,000.

The average sale price closed at $242,361, while the median checked in at $180,000. Wednesday’s average marked a 79 percent gain from the second session of last year’s Book 2, which landed at $135,638. It also displayed a 63 percent rise from last year’s cumulative Book 2 average of $148,672.

The buyback rate finished at 33 percent on Wednesday, compared with 35 percent during the second session of last year’s second book and 33 percent for Book 2 of 2016 at large.

Led by the three yearlings that brought seven figures, a total of six horses sold for $750,000 or more, and 22 sold for $500,000 or more.

“Book 2 started off strong yesterday and continued on today,” Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland’s director of sales operations, said. “I think [the new format] has done what we’ve wanted it to do, and it continues to show the results we’d hoped and expected to get. Buyers have been involved all the way through, and prices have been very good.”

Full to Cloud Computing sells later today as well as an additional Macleans Music(Distorted Humor) x to a M'Doro dam. Sid has spoken on that specific cross a lot, although this own is upside down, still assuming they look the part expect BIG figs for each

Seems like folks are spending a lot of money to win how much ? How many of these hips will earn their keep ? Or pay for themselves?

Very few pay for themselves. The biggest players buy colts looking for the grandest prizes in the game and to make a stallion to offset the losses. Those buying fillies are hoping to win some nice races and either sell high at the bloodstock sales or add to their broodmare band.

And don't forget that a certain (considerable) percentage of these purchases are pinhooking traders that are going to develop the yearlings into 2yo in training sales offers.
