Exclamation Mullins/Gato Go Win SCR story emerging

Quickly yesterday after Jeff Mullins' Gato Go Win was scratched from the Bay Shore, stories emerged at AQU that one of his grooms was caught trying to adminster to the horse while in the detention barn.. TTimes looks like they will have the first news story with details.

Headline only right now, but the assumption yesterday was a milkshake bullet was intended. It was very notable how subdued Mullins was after the Wood win.

BREAKING NEWS: Mullins tried to administer drug to Gato Go Win in detention barn

STORY NOW POSTED:

Mullins allegedly violated detention barn rules
by Ed DeRosa

New York stewards scratched Gato Go Win from the Bay Shore Stakes (G2) on Saturday at Aqueduct after security personnel said they saw trainer Jeff Mullins attempting to administer a substance to the colt before the race.

Joe Mahoney, a spokesman for the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, said that security alleges Mullins brought a syringe into the detention barn.

The Bay Shore was the first leg of an all stakes pick four on Saturday at Aqueduct that included the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1), which Mullins won with I Want Revenge.

“Our stewards are investigating an incident inside NYRA’s detention barn on Saturday afternoon,” Mahoney said. “NYRA security personnel advised the stewards that Mr. Mullins was observed attempting to administer an over-the-counter product called Air Power to [Gato Go Win] in the security barn. He had also apparently taken a syringe into the security barn.

“As a result, the stewards directed that Gato Go Win be scratched, and they will be conferring on this later in the coming week … most likely Wednesday.”

Makes me want to vomit even more thinking of I Want Revenge as the probably Derby favorite.

Seeing how this necessitated a scratch, I imagine that the stewards will have to fine and/or suspend him. And if Dunkirk were to draw in, his trainer would have a cloud over him due to the Wait a While positive at the Breeders' Cup. (Was there any ever resolution to that one?) Lovely timing for Waldrop and company.

I was just thinking about that - how serious an offense would this be? I'd expect in the heirarchy of offenses, it would be worse than getting caught after the fact. Would there be a chance if this proves true that Mullins would be suspended on May 2nd?

This could be very interesting, because you would think he would appeal, and delay any suspension to post Derby? But with all the rules changes and new testing policies, etc., etc, could they come down harder and quicker against him, and really make an example of him?

I think it would be just wonderful to go from a Rick Dutrow Jr. trained Derby winner to a Jeff Mullins trained Derby winner.

I couldn't think of two trainers alive who have made such metoric rises from total obscurity to major circuit kingpins in such very short time. And now that they've paid their dues and stayed near the very top for five or six years ... don't they deserve to win the Derby more than their training counterparts who lack such Alchemistic genius?

Poor Larry Jones. All he can ever do is seem to run 2nd. I think the Derby Gods have frowned on him so because - while he does have the magic of a Dutrow or Mullins - he lacks the sheer hate-ability of those two.

Is hateability even a real word?

I heard a distressed and disturbed fan say something similar while at the Big A
on Saturday.

I guess then that vomiting will be done in epidemic proportions.

I have the fan's permission to use the vomiting quote in my book.

Waiting for the story but considering his past, would it be surprising? I WANT REVENGE might be in the hands of another angel, Dutrow?

I have like this colt (IWR) all along insite of Mullins. They IEAH became involved and it got worse. Then he was extremely impressive in the Wood and I thought, WOW, I really want to like this colt. Then as he was being led back after the race the grooms actually stopped near me as I congratulated them. They adjusted his cooler and smiled and headed off and I thought, that's nice. These guys have a really good horse on their hands. Then I turned around to see the mob of owners coming down the stairs from the winners circle as the Carter horses began to assemble. They charged down the steps, never seeming to notice the horses already walking there.

One extreme to the other...

lol
no wonder ieah didn't argue about keeping mullins as trainer; they seem to have a knack for using cheaters. it would be a lateral move from mullins to dutrow.

what a bunch of idiots. yeah, let's go admin in the detention barn. perhaps sheer stupidity is a defense?

The company’s website states that Air Power will stop a horse’s cough all day and “that nothing manufactured and sold by Finish Line will test positive in any race or show jurisdiction.

i wonder if that should include an * with fine print saying something about they can't guarantee the syringe is invisible.

from the www.thoroughbredtimes.com

"Like Dutrow, Mullins is no stranger to rules violations. In spring 2008, he served a 20-day suspension from the California Horse Racing Board for use of the Class 2 drug mepivicane, and at least one of his horses tested positive for excessive levels of total carbon dioxide in 2005. In the aftermath of his troubles in 2005, Mullins lashed out against the industry and was quoted in the Los Angeles Times as having attributed his troubles to horseplayers “crying about losing a $2 bet.

“If you bet on horses, I would call you an idiot,” the Times quoted the trainer as saying.

Mullins had another total carbon dioxide violation in summer 2008.

Mahoney said that Mullins’s presence in the detention barn itself was not a violation. He added that any attempt to administer something to a horse and possession of a syringe would be violations."

I think having anything in the D-Barns other than your pale and sponge is not acceptable. Not sure of all the rules.

As an upside it was great to get to Aqueduct on Saturday after so many years and making the trip with one of my favorite people and seeing so many folks I don't always get to see and got to witness some pretty good racing I had a great time.

Despite the shroud over IEAH they do have talent for acquiring several graded
winners in a short time. There seems to be the semblance of good team work hear. We will see.

If the whole game goes to hell I'll move my tack to the QVC Network and produce the weekly "spanks" hours. Then we'll see how long it takes me to go bad.
