Default What do you guys deem a longshot?

At what odds, in your guys' mind, is a horse a longshot?

I heard at the track the other night- "I just hit a nice 9/2 longshot"

I didn't say anything, but I was like "please..."

For me, a longshot would probably be 10-1.

I know there's different circumstances, like depending on the size of the field. If it's a big field, the odds will be stretched. But if it's a 5-horse Cali field, maybe a shorter price could be consdiered that. Another circumstance might be an overwhelming favorite taking all the odds (like Barbaro in the Preakness).

But it seemed like that guy thought that if your horse wasn't the favorite, he was a longshot... so I'm wondering what you guys deem a "longshot"?

Double digits. So 10-1 or above. 5-1 is very nice though.

I rarely go lower than 7-2 though. Missed on a 13-1 last night by a head but I was happy. It was a good bet. Started playing a lot of pik 3's for fun to get some clue as how people bet these things so I can get in the right pool in the rolling 3's. Got some ideas. But nothing very concrete.

No for real... didn't you run him at Canterbury Summer of '05? You were bitchin about Anne Von Rosen giving your horse a rotten ride. But then you had Uske the second time and got better results? I swear that was you...

It depends on both the odds and the pecking order of the betting. The third choice at 6-1 in a 14 horse field isn't a longshot, but the 4th choice in a 5 horse field may be considered that.

> the size of the field. In a 4 horse field 9/2 is a longshot. In the Derby it takes 20-1....

Depends to me on the size of the field. I'd agree with the 10-1 number but in a 3 hrse race 9-2 may be a longy. The things I heard yelled at Belmont Saturday were funny and sometimes odd but I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion even if they are wrong.
