Horrible spill at the back of the pack - it looked like Ortiz was in very tight space along the rail with Destination Moon and Ausable Chasm with Studart seemed to maintain her path, but it was hard to tell from the pan shot.

Moon/Ortiz hit the ground hard and would not be surprised to hear that Ausable Chasm was cut in the left rear; hopefully my read on the replay was wrong.

What bothered me in the replay was that Studart was on the whip fairly seriously at the head of the stretch. Now, it might be the case that Ausable was completely clear of the incident, but would like to hear anyone else's view on this one.

In short, horrible to see this on closing day and hopefully all are well.

... and the live feed has been silent on the entire issue which is not usually a good sign. Again, any readers with updates?

Ortiz to N. Shore for evaluation. Destination Moon OK.

Chain reaction was precipitated by Ariel Smith on Summer Flick who came over on Ausable & Maylan who clipped heels with her. In turn, Destination Moon clipped heels with Sable and went down. As long as Ortiz is OK, all in all, seems like the majority involved got away lucky. Ausable tried to go on and looked to have a shot at 4th/5th in the stretch but ended up 6th. Came back well enough with some scrapes. Will ship to Saratoga and may try a $7.5k/N2L at Finger Lakes in a few weeks.

also heard they had to declare a horse in the last race...ortiz was to ride, but of course he could not-and no replacement rider to be found.
glad to hear ausable will try finger lakes next. she's a puzzle for sure; seemingly talented but doesn't put it together on race day. sometimes shows flashes, tantalizingly close at times..maybe get something going vs lesser.

It would be ausome if she shipped to FL. She could go 5.5F, 6F, 8F, 1mi40 or 1mi70. 3 hrs from PI tapeta too. Just don't expect anything close to 52-1 again.
Here's the latest FL chart for nw2L $7.5k 6f...gives you an idea of the company. The track is speed favoring but has some depth.

And here's the replay of this race

Here's link to the detailed DRF chart: http://www1.drf.com/drfPDFChartRaces...=20120715&RN=8

This could have been an even bigger mess. Makes you realize that it's miraculous how few incidents there actually are.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Apprentice rider Jose Ortiz was scheduled to be released from North Shore University Hospital Monday afternoon after an overnight stay following a spill in Sunday afternoon’s eighth race at Belmont Park.

According to the NYRA Jockey Advocate, CT Scans and X-rays were negative on Ortiz, with the exception of a bruised lung.

“We won’t rush into anything,” said Ortiz’s agent, Mike Gonzalez, regarding when he might return to the races. “We will find out more from the doctors and go from there.”

Ortiz, the brother of jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr., was unseated when his mount, Destination Moon, clipped heels with another horse at the half-mile pole. Destination Moon, a 3-year-old daughter of Golden Missile trained by Hall of Famer H Allen Jerkens, appeared uninjured in the incident.
