Is it wrong to hope The Pamplemousse goes undefeated here and through the Santa Anita Derby and then goes first dirt 10furlongs in the Kentucky Derby?

He's the only Cali horse that I think has any chance on dirt. Don't know about 10 furlongs though.

With Kafwain over Rubiano, and from the Piece of Pie family, it's something of a miracle he could win at 8f. Maybe it was the maturity advantage that Kafwain had late at 2 and early in the classic campaign, passed down.

Why do you think he will handle dirt better than Pioneerof the Nile, I Want Revenge, Chocolate Candy, et. al? They are most of them as well dirt-bred as The P. Is it his front-running style? Won't get dirt kicked in his face?

Yeah, in large part. Plus that it took him a while to get used to the surface and break his maiden. He doesn't really fit the profile of the typical synthetic specialist who usually takes to the synthetic surface immediately and wins with a late run on the outside. And there's the possibility if the synthetics are hindering him that he could be a nice horse on dirt. Unfortunately, we probably won't find out until Derby Day and at that point the 10 furlongs will be a bigger question mark than the surface so he'd be impossible to play at anything under 25-1.

i really like The Pmousse, he runs like a good one.

nice effort by the Pletcher horse first time synthetic and just off of the plane.
He embarrassed the rest of the SoCal contingent.

I'm terrible at predicting Beyer Speed Figures, but my guess for the TP's Sham is 112.

I'm guessing the figure has no relevency when it comes to handicapping TP for the Derby.

He's got an odd stride, doesn't he? Picks his knees up quite high, out of the gate. I've decided to call him 'Citrus Dude', since his real name is too long. Isn't Julio Canani a hoot?

If I here the term "figure" and synthetics when talking about a horses ability again I think I may be sick.........they have no relevancy, none.

You have to be able to understand the way the race was run and then judge the final time, its so extreme that it takes "pace makes the race" to a whole new level. Pace makes the final time is what it does.
