All those scratches seemed a bit inexplicable. I get trainers not wanting to race on a bad surface, but the main track was fast and the turf was good. Maybe it was the heat? Noticed that they were thoroughly wetting many horses down and some with water hoses so I think heat would be a likely explanation. I didn't listen to the analysts so might have gotten an explanation if I had. I kept thinking that Smile Happy might get scratched. Never seen one that they practically had to back into the gate. It was exhausting watching the outriders trying to get him where he needed to be.

Default 🐎💥🐎 Official Update 💥🏇💥

OK everybody ~ straight from the Litter Box
I have the official word re: NUMEROUS SCRATCHES

I decided to call Ellis Park racing office
I Asked about all those scratches in the big race

You’re probably not gonna like what I’m about to tell you
~~~~~ But it’s “ straight from the Horse’s Mouth “
“ THE TRAINERS ALL HAD PLANS
TO ENTER FUTURE OTHER RACES “ 🙀
THEY KNEW THAT AHEAD OF ENTERING SATURDAYS RACE 😾
I asked the man in the racing office why would they do that ?
Without hesitation he said
“because they like playing games “
Who they really hurt ~
Were the fans and people betting on those horses 🐎
While I share your disappointment that the Fleur Des Lis scratched down to a field of only 3 runners, I'm not sure that we have much reason to become indignant. The fact that runners in a stakes race were cross entered in either another race at the same track, or a race at another track is not unusual; trainers will enter multiple races and see which one comes up tougher or see how shipping arrangements might work out. It's just not as glaring as yesterday was. Sometimes, trainers will put in an entry or two into a race that has been sparsely entered just to make sure that race actually gets only the program, then scratch on the morning of the race. Sometimes that is even done as a favor to the racing secretary.
As to bettors being hurt by these activities, I don't follow your logic. The scratches were posted long before any bets were placed, so no bettor lost any money because of this. The did lose the opportunity to, say, bet the trifecta on this race, but there are plenty of other betting opportunities. As to the fans being hurt, when was the last time that any of the horsemen really gave much thought about doing something for the benefit of the fans? They are usually the last ones taken into consideration.
Not really a complaint from me. Just an observation that it seemed unusual on what seemed to be a perfect day for racing. As for the trainers "just playing games." I think the game that they are playing is to consider the best interests of the horses and the owners and of course themselves and to do so and make a profit so maybe they can be forgiven for placing us fans a little further down the ladder of consideration. As for me personally, I wasn't much harmed except a little confusion about whether my wager would be considered in a pick 4 including the 3 horse race. Consulted the rules later and found out that it would have been, but didn't matter as I would not have had that $94 winner in the turf race. Did manage to make a real world profit on the feature race with a small exacta and even a place and show on the 48-1 show horse. Those longshot plays don't usually pay off for me, but sometimes hard to resist putting a couple of dollars on them. In a race, that seemed like it would be pretty fast early, it seemed to make sense to put a few dollars on a closer that nobody liked.
