 RACE FIVE, RATED 105-80 (C1), 1,800 METRES Dumbarton Rock did a steady 1,200m gallop on Monday and has done plenty of pace work. He looks an absolute treat. Really Happy's last two steady 800m gallops confirmed he is back to his old self. Best Friend is slowly coming back to form and he showed it when lengthening nicely five days ago over 800m. Fat Choy Ichiban hit the line strongly at the end of his 1,200m workout last Thursday - going better than his workmates - and also had a slick 800m blow-out with speedy Our Lucky Baby on Monday. Ambitious General is a star worker. He trialled superbly over this course on February 20 and did a sparkling gate jump out 13 days ago with Native Kid (400m in 21.7).

Since running out a surprise victor of the Champions Mile almost exactly three years ago, Able One had won just once in the interim, with three different stress fractures to his off-fore and hind legs blighting any hopes of progress. Yet on this occasion, he was clearly quietly fancied by connections, with stable jockey Darren Beadman opting to ride him over higher-rated stablemates Collection and Viva Pataca, both better suited over longer distances and preparing for the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup at the end of the month. Five of the 11 starters had been successful at the highest level with three of last month's Mercedes-Benz HK Derby protagonists - Beauty Flash, Brave Kid and Fair Trade - best supported in the betting. Beadman slipped Able One into a handy position in third and took over from pacesetter Beauty Flash at the top of the straight and hung on from the typically determined late rally from Mr Medici by a neck.
