Great thread, but I can't believe that there's absolutely no mention of Saarland. Am I the only idiot that had him that day?

This thread reminds me that my old man booked a $20 Win Bet on Sunday Silence for me in 1989 and then stiffed me. Time to get get out the calculator and figure some compounded interest.

I recall he was trying to teach me a lesson that I should have been saving my work money for college instead of playing horses.....

I had a pretty good run of horses hitting the board at one point, didn't I? Lost a lot of concentration AK (after kids). But Skip Away was the best horse in the race; he just hated Churchill.

2005 - Afleet Alex (3rd)*
2006 - Barbaro (1st)
2007 - Street Sense (1st)
2008 - Big Brown (1st)
2009 - Chocolate Candy (5th)

Not too shabby for my first five years.

*Speaking of Afleet Alex, anybody here have a compelling reason to make me feel good about Dublin winning the Derby? I'm on the fence right now, but have a hunch that he might win (even though his credentials say no).

The youngsters here forget how much easier it was to identify the good horses going into the Derby in the 1970s and 80s. They ran 4,5,6 races before the Derby - 3 at a minimum - and tended to have proper 2yo campaigns before that. After 10 or more starts, the wheat tended to be pretty obvious, and the chaff could be dismissed from consideration.

Bandini ran the Derby as a yearling? No wonder he got beat!

Bandini ran in 2005. I tossed him that year ... couldn't stand the FuPig headcase that he was. LOL
