Closing Guantánamo Fades as a Priority
By CHARLIE SAVAGE
Published: June 25, 2010

WASHINGTON — Stymied by political opposition and focused on competing priorities, the Obama administration has sidelined efforts to close the Guantánamo prison, making it unlikely that President Obama will fulfill his promise to close it before his term ends in 2013.

wonder if he'll apologize? especially to people like Riot who were outraged with Gitmo. Next thing we'll hear is he's extending the pull out date in Afghanistan and Ernie Banks was his favorite Sox player.

This is unfortunate. Pretty much all of the campaign promises I actually cared about have not come true. Though he got his health insurance law passed, it basically has no teeth and is unlikely to accomplish anything that a national healthcare bill should accomplish.

So he's pretty much 0-fer things I care about.

I do want Gitmo closed. I was not "outraged" over it. I see no reason not to close it, and I think the fear-mongering monkeybrains who don't want those prisoners transferred to places like Illinois ... are ... monkeybrains.

From 'Zig's Politifact website:

Obama promises broken: 19
Obama promises accomplished: 116

Obama promises in the works to being accomplished: over 100
Obama is already up there as one of the Presidents who have done the most in their first year. His problem in my view is that he gives too much benefit of the doubt. Democrats have always had a tendency towards empathy Not so the GOP.

I'm far from hard left, so am not as unhappy as some far more progessive over what Obama has done so far. Of course, nothing he would do would suit a self-professed libertarian, I imagine.

I saw Ernie play at Wrigley multiple times It's a beautiful day for a ballgame! Ron Santo ... sigh
