Love your name Gaining Ground. Now I get to think of those Battaglia calls that come up in my nightmares.

Why the hate for Battaglia?

I almost never watch races from that track, but he doesn't seem that awful to me the few times I've heard him.

He's way past awful. He takes forever to identify horses and elongates words like "seconnnd" in addition to his "GAINING GROUND" BS. I have to mute the TV.

Weird.

The only use I have for callers is to figure out where the horses I'm following in the race are placed, early in the race. From there I can, for the most part, follow what I need visually.

I usually end up not even noticing the call as anything more than a buzz in my ear.

From the TDN:

You couldn't see it as she romped away from the
field, but there is a good reason why Christine Daae
was named for the young woman who became the
obsession of the Phantom of the Opera.
Trainer Patrick Biancone explained.
Let me tell you why, Biancone said. She is a chestnut,
OK? But on the left side of her face, she has a big
white mark, like a mask. I called my owners and I said,
Listen, she has a mask, like the Phantom. We cannot
call her Phantom, because that's not right for a filly, but
Christine Daae is a beautiful girl from the Phantom of
the Opera, so we should try that.

Yeah, I guess uneducated white trashy types find musicals to be 'gay'.

And some are pretty lame, I guess.

But how is Les Miserables or even Evita 'gay'? They are pretty good political commentaries, if anything.

You can have that book learnin' and still think musicals are fantastically gay...which they are.

I really wish I knew which big race at Turfway last year it was, maybe the Lane's End?, where he just kept repeating "GAINING GROUND!" because he couldn't figure out which horse was coming on the outside. It was an all-time Battaglia classic.

It's okay, IC. You can like musicals if you want. Just not "Phantom," because it sucks.
