I don't know that it's apparent. He ran a fever, and had a slight pulse in one foot. He never lost his appetite, which is a good sign.

Assistant trainer Lara Van Deren said fifth-place Kentucky Derby finisher Recapturetheglory was doing much better May 11, a day after running a 102-degree temperature.

“Yesterday was real tough,” Van Deren said. “He will probably leave tomorrow for Chicago and miss three or four days of training.”

Owned by trainer Louie Roussel III and Ronald Lamarque, Recapturetheglory was on track to leave Churchill Downs May 10 for Baltimore and a start in the Preakness before the fever knocked him out of the race.

GAYEGO – Trainer Paulo Lobo reported Monday morning that a start in the Preakness Stakes by Cubanacan Stables’ Gayego is under consideration.

“I’m going to decide (Tuesday). We are going to have a meeting,” Lobo said from Southern California. “I’m going to track him in the morning, then we’ll make a decision.”

Gayego, the Arkansas Derby (G2) winner, finished a troubled 17th in the Kentucky Derby, in which he had to be steadied in traffic after getting off to a sluggish start. Lobo said his colt never got into the race after his early troubles.

“That’s the reason we are thinking about (the Preakness),” he said. “He’s very happy right now and he came back very sound.”

Gayego could offer EXCELLENT value underneath in the Preakness. He's much better than his Derby performance, and there generally isn't much support for 17th place finishers in the Derby.

I totally disagree. I think most people will put a line through his Derby (as they probably should), and he'll get bet down to 6-1 or so off of his previous two races.

I still don't think he's a legitimate 9+ furlong horse, and I'd need 10-1 or better to include him.

I don't know about value, in fact, I'd suspect the horse would be second favorite in the race even given his Derby finish.

GAYEGO – Trainer Paulo Lobo reported Tuesday that Gayego is a “go” for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes. The son of Gilded Time, who galloped 1¼ miles at Hollywood Park Tuesday morning, is scheduled to arrive at Pimlico Wednesday afternoon following a cross-country flight that he will share with Preakness hopeful Yankee Bravo.

“He’s an extremely good shipper,” said Lobo, whose colt shipped to Oaklawn Park in April for a victory in the Arkansas Derby and shipped again for a start in the Kentucky Derby on May 3.

Gayego finished a disappointing 17th in the Derby as the sixth betting choice in a field of 20, compromised by a sluggish start and early crowding. Lobo reported that the Kentucky-bred colt didn’t overexert himself in the Run for the Roses.

“He came back very well,” he said. “He’s been eating everything. He’s feeling happy.” Mike Smith, who has ridden Gayego in each of his six lifetime starts, has the return mount for the Preakness. Smith rode Prairie Bayou to victory in 1993. Lobo has not started a horse at Pimlico.

You know what? I'm actually psyched Gayego is coming to Baltimore. Even with his Derby finish, I would suggest his entry would undoubtedly add to the overall quality of the Preakness field.

if you think that much of him for $11 more, don't forget Gayego/BB/All

personally, i'm glad he's running because he'll take money and for me he's a toss...he's logged more miles in the past two weeks than shelly the stewardess...

Default Big Brown the 1-2 favorite for Preakness Stakes

Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown is the 1-2 morning-line favorite for Saturday’s 133rd Preakness Stakes, for which 13 three-year-olds were entered this morning. None of the other 12 horses are less than single-digit odds in linemaker Frank Carulli’s line.

Post positions won't be determined until late this afternoon, when a traditional draw will be held at the ESPN Zone in the Inner Harbor (5-6 p.m. EDT ESPN2).

The Preakness broke from the Kentucky Derby last year in reverting back to the time-honored “luck of the draw” instead of the two-tiered system Churchill Downs instituted 11 years ago where participants select their horses’ starting posts.

Besides Big Brown, Gayego is the only other Derby starter to advance to the 1 3/16-mile Preakness, marking only the sixth time since 1918 that only two starters made both races. The last time was in 1980 when Codex, who was not nominated to the Derby, defeated Derby-winning filly Genuine Risk.

Here are the horses, with riders and trainers, with Pimlico oddsmaker Frank Carulli’s odds:

Big Brown Desormeaux/Dutrow 1-2

Behindatthebar Flores/Pletcher 10-1

Gayego Smith/Lobo 8-1

Giant Moon Dominguez/Schosberg 30-1

Hey Byrn Lopez/Plesa 20-1

Icabad Crane Rose/Motion 30-1

Kentucky Bear Theriot/Baker 15-1

Macho Again Leparoux/Stewart 20-1

Racecar Rhapsody Albarado/McPeek 30-1

Riley Tucker Prado/Mott 30-1

Stevil Velazquez/Zito 30-1

Tres Borrachos T. Baze/Greely 30-1

Yankee Bravo Solis/Gallagher 15-1
