Lottery sales do the very best in the very poorest places in San Antonio. I dont know about other cities. Kinda sad. The unskilled labor crowd just jam the Convenience Stores that sell them on Friday after they get their check.

Its a bit more than sad. Ahh heck. Maybe its a thrill to look for the numbers in the morning paper. I would not know.

I wonder where the Houston area schools rank on the list? Its a shame you have schools around here with a class call English as a Second Lanuage. I thought this was the United States of America where we speak English and not Spanish?

I just think it means English is the second language they pick up. I know my grandma (fluent in Spanish and English) taught me Spanish when I was very young. I spoke Spanish primarily. When she died, I apparently switched to English exclusively. This is what I was told by my parents. I cant speak a lick of Spanish now. But I can understand some. Its kinda of funny when people are talking about you in Spanish and they assume you dont know what they are saying because your skin is whiter.

My mother is fluent in both, and my dad was a horrible speaker of Spanish, but he could understand everything. Guess thats living in San Antonio and having a grandma from Mexico. It is extremely useful to be fluent in both in this part of the country. You can get a whole lot more business done, I know that. Even receptionists are paid more if they can speak both for many businesses. When you are on the border with a large country that wishes to spend money in your country but speaks a diff. language, adapting to circumstances can be useful. I wish was fluent in both. Geography can play cruel tricks.

I don't go for the "they must speak English" stuff. Why must they speak English? As long as they're legal and the children are in class where English is spoken, I couldn't give a damn if they communicate by whistling out their a ss. If they can make it great, if not, too bad. It's not as if the first thing every Italian, Greek, Russian, Jew or Armenian who came through Ellis did was run to the English language school.

As far as people speaking about me in a foreign language, I also could not care less about that. There's very few people in the world who have something to say regarding me that I consider worthwhile hearing.

It can be quite amusing though... When you are referred to as the short man and the people referring to me as the short man are shorter. Also when the Custodians are cussing the kids (after they have left and the Custodians are cleaning) in your class out after they have made a mess on lab day. Or when they make fun of a bad hair day for some of the teachers that actually care about their hair.

Or when they talk about how the Down Syndrome kid ins Special Ed.tried to grope them.
