the reason one and two are avoided is that you have to move towards the outer rail after the start a bit. if they break straight, and run straight-they'll hit the inner rail where the chute meets the straight/turn.

they could have pushed pioneer all the way inside and nobody did it?

seems strange...he must not do well inside of horses...or they were concerned about a log jam in the first turn.

The auxilary gate makes sense from the standpoint a horse will have half the chance of being bumped at the break, also I think it reduces the wait time in the gate due to the simultaneous load. Atleast I remember reading that from Pletcher's reasoning on selecting 15 for Bandini.
