There have been literally dozens of impressive maiden winners that have either disappeared or fizzled out badly. Already this year we've seen Octave ( I believe she was declared a future Grade 1 winner on this very board ) finish a horrendous second in just her second start. I am surprised to see someone as knowledgable as Oracle declare that Circle Quay, after just his second start against a highly suspect field, is " great ". Perhaps I totally misunderstood ( wouldn't be the first time ).

" Great " seems to get thrown around just a little too easily in this game these days. Last year at this time we were reading about future TC winner Half Ours. He, shockingly, never ran again. Let's just hold our horses ( I couldn't resist ) before annointing champions in July....especially from a barn that seems to have trouble developing the vast talent it holds.

LOL!!!! The reality is due to his trainer/vet he's just as likely to either drop dead or never run again! Half Ours anyone?

Probably right. Guys like Tabor and the Sheikhs rarely fly in just for a race like that. Maybe he just flew in because he wanted to watch the race because he could.

That's ridicuous.

You run 1100 horses a year, win 300 or so races including 40-50 stakes races... guess what ... one or more are not going to come back to run well again!!

Really, now...

And what number would be normal for ''mysterious'' deaths in this operation?

So, three in a matter of days, all occuring to horses that just ran explosive races, would be troublesome?

I was just told Tabor's wife bred Circular Quay. I didn't realize she was a breeder. I would think you will see them at all of his races. He is a february foal, which explains a bit.

is the Quay part pronounced:

Kay or
Key?

Everywhere I have seen the word Quay used, it was always properly pronounced as key.

Wasn't this about 3 or 4 years ago? Left Bank and one of his Stakes Fillies passed away from Colic, within a couple of days of each other.

You got it.

Read in the paper today it's pronounced Circular KEY. Kway does sound cooler though.

Left Bank was put down due to laminitis, Warners died from colic, and Freedom's Daughter died from colitis x. Not sure if the conspiracy theorists need to look into these deaths as "mysterious" since all had great value, Warners as a racehorse, Left Bank as a stallion, Freedom's Daughter as a broodmare. But since its Pletcher its "mysterious". How come no mention of Swale? maybe b/c he was trained by Woody. The guy is a good trainer, he's sharp, and flat out better than most; he also uses hyperbaric chambers (which help horses recover faster) lubrisyn, muscle adjustments, etc that old school trainers don't want to use.
Now Michael Gill's horse that they cut of the leg and took away from the track, that's mysterious.

All three died very shortly after delivering career defying performances. I also am skeptical that Left Bank died from laminitis and would love to see a news story backing that up.

Nobody is accusing anybody of anything. It's just a tragic coincidence. The performance of Freedom's Daughter in the Adirondack was really something to behold...especially in light of her previous mediocre efforts. Sad, really sad, to see a horse so clearly on the brink of greatness die so young. Warners too. After his exciting debut he really disappointed in subsequent efforts before delivering his pp defying performance ( some may remember the HUGE wager that dropped his odds as the gate popped on that Saturday at Saratoga ). And, worst of all, Left Bank, the sprinter who rated behind a loose speed in the Whitney, and still drew off to defeat Street Cry ( fresh off his drubbing of Congaree in the Steven Foster where he earned a 122 Beyer fig ) and Lido Palace. He was always one of my favorites. In fact, I had needed him for a score in his previous two turn effort, over two years earlier, when he got drowned by a Mitch Friedman horse ( Oracle help me out here ) at Gulfstream.

A sad coincidence.

6 Native Dancers, 3 Raise A Natives...he may have a great career but the breeding odds are stacked against him staying sound.

This breeding may result in some racing success but it doesn nothing to enhance the breed, imo.
