I have some nice ones. Shot o' Bourbon and Darlin' by Day are beauties.
They'll be ready this spring. Both 2yo's.
I just registered the colt and the new filly with the Jockey Club. The names haven't been approved yet, so I'll have to wait to let you know what they'll be called. Mera wanted me to name the weanling filly "Vodka Shot"...it was the 3rd choice. First choice for the filly was Ciel Bonne and for the colt, Daring Day.
I'm not kidding. Stay tuned, and don't laugh too much. These are nice ones.

If i would have bet Mountaineer only for the whole year i would've shown a profit.But since it took me about 6 months to decide to do that i with heavy heart have to confess i'm below the Mendoza line.

I'm down on horses as well, last i checked it was somewhere in the 350-400 range which all in all, for a year of fun, is so well worth it.

Down on the year...not sure how much. But on a more positive note, I practiced an infinite amount more patience this year at the windows than ever before. So all in all, I am pleased with the year I had. Just trying to continue the learning process.

Absolutely thrilled with the naysayers showing up. The same thing happened last year, on the Delmar forum and a couple of the computer people validated my earnings claims. So I started posting there. After posting about a $2000 hit in January 2006 on an $18 bet, then a $10,000 hit in early February on a $32 ticket they now tolerate me.

My home forum is Nola, but I post anywhere.

In no particular order:

Philcski: I hope my last PM was clear.

Hooves: I buy the form in bulk, I use colored pens extensively, marking what is germane to that race such as; par times, internal fractions, turf rails and trainer intent. Collective races and understanding the condition book are strengths.

Scuds: I expect to have the FG pick 4 friday and will post it on this forum. Indeed the year is not over yet.

Rupert: A normal week would be a $24 pick four bet on the best midwest track running on Sunday. I do play when I can get the DRF well ahead of time on Thurs or Friday, again in the midwest. I did play Delmar this past August, but will not again. Keeneland was very good to me this meet. I posted one horse per day 16 days, so $32 for the meet. I hit three winners (with six seconds) and the winners added up to $82, a salty but meaningless ROI indeed.

Apologies to someone about Robbie Albarado. I was live at Louisiana Downs to three horses in the pick 4. And Robbie wiped out two of them, one was 30-1 and I would probably have taken down the pool (some 30,000) had he won. Robbie got seven days, but they paid 3 of 4 and I got almost $400 for each of the three tix. Good cappin. BBB

I never bet more than I can afford to lose so I limit myself to $20. Fun if I win. Can still pay the bills if I lose. I lost my $20 on the Derby. I came home with $52 from Saratoga on Travers Day and I won $76 on the B.C.. Minus racing forms, snacks, gas, etc., I probably broke even but more importantly I had fun! Deb

This thread made me do a little research which was actually very helpful for me... I used Pinnacle for most of the year and closed out that account by taking out about a $75 profit (without the rebates probably would have been down a couple hundred for the year). I opened a Bris account in October and LOVE the account history feature. I started digging through it and came up with the following stats/results:

In almost 2 months I have wagered a little over $1,700 and have a profit/loss of +$32 - that's pretty darn close to breaking even... not bad. I bet primarily on Bay Meadows and Mountaineer but had a few bets on almost every other track.

The stats I thought were interesting were the following:

At Bay Meadows, I had a win % of 29.95% with a $1 R.O.I. of $1.17 - obviously my best track (the thing that really jacked up my % was when Baze was going for the record - for the week before, his horses were going off at insanely low odds so the winning horses were having great payoffs).

My best stats overall are a win % of 33% for W/P bets and a $1 R.O.I. of $1.06 for Pick 3 bets... I was really weak with pick 4's and trifectas and I know that's because I just don't go deep enough... also, I really sucked at Aquaduct this year - I won ONE bet out of 50, but that cause I did too many p3/p4 without going deep enough.

The great thing about this is it's made me realize what my betting strengths and weaknesses are - I do pretty good picking a winner, and do ok picking three in a row, but other exotics are not good for me - I'm just too cheap to go deep enough to make it worth while.

And for myself, I remember the days of the ESPN board where people would joke about the foolishness of someone playing "*ALL" somewhere on their Tri or Super bets.

I never admitted it then, but now I will.....I'm a big player of two horses with the "a bunch" in super and tri plays.

I only bet at the OTB about 30 times a year. Probably about half those times I see a race I really like from my casual following of the west coast tracks, and I go in with one fixed bet in mind. Usually a heavy win, with some back up Exactas. About 10 times I'll go in with a "lose" budget of $200 to $500 and play "picked on the spot" WIN and PLACE, and if I get a little of the track's money loosen up (with the help of some Bud Light) and buy some "lotto type" tri's and supers.

It's a rare year that I do not have signers.

On a good day I'll win $300 to $500, and on a great day I'll win $900 to $3000. Probaby 1/3 of the time I end up between -$200 and +$200.

I NEVER lose more than $300 to $500 on my bad days, so my losses are controlled.

It works for me, and I have a helluva good time. And when I get the nice win, I always celebrate and do something concrete with the $$ besides putting it back in the track. Nice dinner for the wife, or a good bottle of wine. Or some nice electronics or something.

That said, I've been in less lettuce before in my life, and had an equally heckuva good time playing 9 races of $5 win/place bets. I just love horse racing.

I've got to agree with you there... I got into this two years ago and I truly love it! I love to watch the horses run, I love the analytical side of the DRF and trying to determine a winner, I love the banter that happens at the track and on this site... this is good fun and I view my betting as a personal challenge of my abilities to "figure it out"... the $$$ is a bonus - "winning" is what makes it worth while.

I bet on horse races for the same reason Steve Fossett flies balloons around the world - I want to conquer something... I like to compete and win but I'm getting too old to play sports anymore and I've found that people don't like to play games with me because I'm an obnoxious winner and a piss-poor loser - bad combination for social events So, instead, I go to a track, or stay at home, and watch the horses run, and yell at them and pound my fist - and if I win - great... and if I lose - well, g*d-d*amn it! It just feels good to compete.
