Default Borel should be fined or suspended

He totally abused Rachael down the stretch. I counted 20 times Borel went to the whip. I am not one to cry animal abuse but I haven't seen that much whipping in a very long time. Would not surprise me if Rachael were to bounce in her next start because of it.

OMG.... She losses if he does not go to the whip. Before I continue are you even serious? Bounce, Im guessing she did bounce today, MA career top beyer is a 105, even if he improved off that, I still doubt she topped her 116 of last.

yea, yea, yea...if he wins it's justified, if she lost, you would have said he abused her, I get it.

How many times would have been acceptable in your eyes? Should he have hit her 5? 10?

I second that. He would've gotten suspended if he hadn't gone to the whip enough, i.e. not hit her that much and she loses. It's called 'not persevering.' How new are you to horse racing? I don't mean to be snarky, I genuinely want to know. I don't see how he's supposed to ride a 1-4 shot in a close finish any differently without getting penalized. I was more upset with him in the Haskell. No need to swing the whip on her that much. She was already putting them away. He could take a shot that she'd win without much whipping today, but that's a big risk.

Listen fellas, I've been watching and betting racing for over 40 years in NY and going to races in NJ, PA, FL, MA and Maryland. You can't say with a straight face that Borel wasn't slightly excessive with the whip. Watch the race again and see how he gets into her. Does it make a difference? Would she have still won if he was not so aggressive? Bottom line is that there are elements who will bring this up and frown on racing.

I agree but....it happens in the 10k claiming races as well. Unless they make new guidelines for all levels of horses, Borel had every right to do it as long as RA wasn't injured.

This is reminiscent of when Mike Smith beat the tar out of Azeri in the Humana Distaff in 2004. I believe he hit her almost 30 times.

Pat Day was notorious for 20 or more swats of the whip in the stretch. Reference Farda Amiga in the Alabama in 2002.

It's really not even something worth talking about, especially considering he said afterwards that she reacted more to seeing Macho Again than anything else.

If it makes you feel any better, he'll go after a $5K starter horse at Churchill with equal gusto.

Too fckin bad if they dont like it. It is part of the game and if they were using those new whips then they dont even need whipping rules. They are like nerf whips.

Whips that don't whip are worthless.

Anyone read the comments under the Blood-Horse's posting of Haskell's article on Facebook regarding Calvin's ride?
