Default Other years, other Derby lists.....

I love reading the early top 10, 20, whatever lists.

I've decided to stay away from those for now... probably cause of my stellar early picks in the past.

Who were some of yours..... you know, who were you reeeeeally wrong about?

I'll start. I had futures on such illustrious runners as Itsallaboutthechase , Really Indian, and Flashy Bull (hey, at least he went on to win something).

The Wood..... flashbacks of looking for Pavo and Deputy Glitters. Camera didn't pan that far back either time, I'm sorry to say.

Last year it was all about Great Hunter and, closer to the Derby, Zanjero.

Aaaah well.

Who wants to go next?

Last year I was a big fan of both Great Hunter and Notional a few months out.
My most ridiculous recent prediction would have to be in 2004 when I was convinced the week before the race that Friends Lake was going to run a big one.
I am still ashamed of that one.

I liked Friends Lake, but it was the first Derby I actually bet on and the first day I bet horse racing as it was my 18th Birthday, so I have an excuse.

saarland. he ended my infatuation with late closer's. it turns out the jock sends the horse close to the finish line regardless if it's a 6f or 12f race. so passing all those tired horses late but not winning keeps happening even as the distance increases.

read the footnotes. one good race in january apparently doesn't make you a great overlay in the derby.

When I first got into horse racing a few years back it was Friends Lake, thein I liked High Fly, and most recently it was Sharp Humor and Scat Daddy. Not that good of luck for me.

Scat Daddy was mine. I thought he was excellent value last year, and I thought he was good thing to hit the board.

Bellamy Road was the biggest heartbreaker...although I'm still naming my first child after him.

Derby picks of the past.....oh, well...here goes nothing;

Spend a Buck '85 - long time between winners with this one
Badgerland '86 - one of many Lukas also-rans
Bet Twice '87 - runner-up twice...went off him in Belmont!
Forty Niner '88 - always liked this one
Easy Goer '89 - if only he had another pilot other than "patient" Pat
Summer Squall '90 - one race too early
Hansel '91 - see above
Technology '92 - original choice was AP Indy, but we know what happen
Union City '93 - another Lukas runner...brokedown in Preakness
Brocco '94 - got sucked in that California form
Talkin' Man '95 - got sucked into his Gotham victory
Unbridled's Song '96 - what could have been with better connections & no sore foot
Pulpit '97 - didn't want anything to do with the Derby distance
Halory Hunter '98 - liked him even more going into the Preakness, but never made it
General Challenge '99 - entrymate with Excellent Meeting (the filly) two for the price of one.....NOT!
Fusaichi Pegasus '00 - the streak is finally broken, went down in flames next start
Point Given '01 - SHOULD have been a Triple Crown winner!
Saarland '02 - by default that year...wasn't hot about anybody
Ten Most Wanted '03 - on the band wagon too soon
Read the Footnotes '04 - ??????????????
Afleet Alex '05 - got caught on the "dead" inside, game little bugger!
Barbaro '06 - R.I.P.
Street Sense '07 - w/ Hard Spun, my FIRST "cold" exacta

Badgerland was 100 the best in the 1986 Derby ( and, no, I didn't bet him ).

I was a HUGE Wilko supporter in the Derby. He didn't run a bad one, but he didn't run a big one either.

And I was very high on Notional last year before he was taken off the trail.

That year was the "great" Sea Hero's victory

Also like your '95 pick.....his claim to fame, wire job in the Bluegrass at HUGE odds
