Apparently it was a 2 for 1.. You get POTN who was a slug with enough BLK type to sell a few seasons BUT you have to also take the very very very special laimo Maimonides..

Where did you see they retired Maimonides?

I wonder if that 110.2 gate work at the end of July did him in. He worked again six days later and poof, that was it. From a 110.20g to a 103.40 and retirement in six days!

He had done enough:

Vinery has added another Zayat Stables runner to its stallion roster.

The Kentucky-based breeding operation announced Thursday that it will add the 4-year-old Maimonides to its Florida division. On Wednesday, the Kentucky division picked up Pioneerof the Nile for stud duty from Zayat Stables.

Maimonides was third in the Grade 1 Hopeful at 2 in 2007. He retires from Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's barn with a maiden win from two starts. He bucked shins after the Hopeful, according to owner Ahmed Zayat, who said the colt had bad luck but was "the best horse I have ever owned. Period."

"We wanted to give him as much time as he needed, but he had just had bad luck," Zayat said. "He is a horse with unfulfilled potential, but I hope that he will be able to prove himself in the breeding shed like his siblings El Corredor and Roman Ruler."

A son of Vindication and Silvery Swan, Maimonides is a half-brother to El Corredor and Roman Ruler. He sold to Zayat Stables for $4.6 million at the 2006 Keeneland September yearling sale.

His fee hasn't been set yet.

They were both there when I visited last week. I was a huge POTN hater but he's a lot better looking in person than I expected. Maimonides... well, his half brothers are good.

Zayat will be out of the game soon enough. Standing low credentialed (is that a real word??) stallions at the worst possible time to do so (now) will eat up a whole lot of that money he is spending on racehorses. Of course if stud farms grossly overpay for said stallions, maybe he wont do so bad.
