Default SI | Out of the Darkness (Jeff Lukas)

A good, (if long) read.

Sports Illustrated Longform | Out of the Darkness

Quote:
Twenty years ago, Jeff Lukas was the top assistant to his legendary father, thoroughbred trainer D. Wayne Lukas. Then, one morning at Santa Anita, site of this weekend’s Breeders’ Cup, he stood in the path of a charging horse and lost everything. Or did he?

What a fantastically well written piece. Shows you life can change in an instant. It's uplifting that he is happy, or has come to terms with his condition. He's blessed to have resources and a strong support structure, makes you think about those who don't.

A bit of a depressing read...with him and the cheerleader/honor student who tweaked out on Meth and hung herself because her parents divorced.

Jeff used to come to the OBS ITW quite a bit when he was at Padua down here. My wife sold programs at the ITW back then, and often struck up a conversation with him. She used to point him out to me, never failing to mention that he was a very polite gentleman.
