You're right. I think a lot of what makes a horse "great" or whatever is how he responds when he is denied the trip he wants or when he has to overcome poor racing luck. Bernardini ran great today; hell, it's hard to win this race. Maybe the jock pushed him too soon, then again it may not have mattered.

At some point, they all get beat.
