I actually thought Nehro was ridden pretty well... regardless of the fractions, the field was bunched like the pace was somewhat moderate, and it even felt like they were moving methodically from a visual standpoint, especially down the backstretch.

The answer for Nehro was probably the mid-pack trip that Animal Kingdom enjoyed, but the way he was ridden was a better option than dropping back with Dialed In and Archarcharch.

I agree. Nakatani's quotes after the Derby were really interesting -- some of them do think when they get up there!

It was definitely a 180 from Nakatani's previous Derby rides on prominent horses for Nick Zito. He had A.P. Valentine too far back and ran into all sorts of traffic in the '01 Derby and had Halory Hunter well behind with too much to do in '98.

In fact, I wonder if Zito didn't take a quick glance at his program during the race to see if he accidentally gave Nakatani a leg up on Dialed In.
