Not at the drop of a hat, but it can be done and in a not so long amount of time. And that's precisely because they aren't owned by CDI and therefore cannot be held hostage. The only reason they stay at Calder is because they want to stay at Calder. The terms of staying there just changed (or maybe not) but they still have a choice. They are not being forced to do anything. They do what they do by choice.

Except they are being forced by Calder to not run or risk the possibility of not getting stalls back. That is more or less blackmail. Can the horseman choose to leave? Yes obviously. But that isn't the question here. It is Calder/CDI flippantly using the horseman as a bargaining chip to their detriment regardless of how the end game plays out.

Does the fear of losing stalls running horses away always enter into the mind of a trainer? Can a trainer with 10 stalls at Belmont just run to Philly all the time and run in a 16k claimer without NYRA having a talk with him/her?

The difference being that Calder isnt offering any races presently. I'm sure if NYRA shut down for 3 months they wouldnt have an issue with shipping to Philly Park during the downtime.

I agree it sucks what do you want for free? you want freedom it costs so go to Palm Meadows/Payson's and rent space. It sucks but it is well within there rights if horseman were aligned they would enter when Calder opens and just repeatly scratch once a week

But it isnt free. Horseman dont have to pay stall rent but if Calder closes the backside or charges stall rent their tax rate goes up something like 5 times what it is now. So the price of keeping the backside open is far less than the price of not having it open.

So Calder should continue to subsidize trainers and owners that are using it's free stalls to fill races at GP after GP essentailly declred war on them? Especially when Calder's plan is to start racing year round in response to GP? For once it may be time for government to step in on this one and reregulate dates since the tracks couldn't behave on their own, but surely that will come at a price too.
