But I really don't think as this of a knee jerk reaction. Clearly the move by Viktor Tikhonov in 1980, was a hot headed knee jerk reaction. He underestimated the US (why shouldn't he) and clearly thought they had no chance of winning reguardless who was between the pipes.
This is a case of them replacing a goalie that has been playing below his usual level. With an very (actually 2) capeable backups on the roster, they feel like this is the time for a switch. But reguardless anything less than a gold medal performance will be second guessed. (should they have stayed with Marty? or Why didn't they put Luongo in).

EXACTLY!!!!!

NJ aint winning no 2-1 games this year, Marty's GAA is up, he's been shaky ever since game 7 last year, his puckhandling skills got him into trouble last game and i think its the right move if canada wants to continue playing in this tourney. HOF or the greatest goalie of all time, a change in net need to be made IMO

as far as the caps go, Dale Hunter was my all time favorite cap. and goalies, who can forget jim carey, bill ranford, hated pete peeters, mike liut, but i think my favorite was Don Beaupre. some of the all time cap greats, gartner, ridley, miller, bonzi, stevens, pivonko, gustafsson, galley, as you can see i'm a huge caps fan

did you see that the caps selected bengt gustaffsons boy in the draft last fall? hard to believe he's old enough to have a son old enough to play!! i remember michael pivonka...beaupre. hell, i still call it the cap center-and it's not even the same place anymore, let alone called the cap center.

so nice to have others who remember those guys. no one i know down here does. seems the only person i can really talk hockey with about back then is my dad. remember clint malarchuk? he got traded away and then had that ghastly accident on the ice. ugh

I will take Teemu Selanne from NHL '92 over any of them. He was unstoppable on that game

God that brings back memories... Had season tix at the old Cap Center from '87 - '89.... Scott Stevens, Kevin Hatcher on D, Geoff Cortnall, Mike Ridley (from the Rangers), Gus, Dave Christian, Dale Hunter, Pivonka.... The DAYS!!!!

Christ I can't believe it's been 20 years

one of my favorite memories was standing there yelling 'hextall. hextall'. lol i remember all those guys...the name calle johanson came to mind earlier today. hell, when i first started going, i was 7-i think there were more players than there were fans in the stands. my dad used to get free tickets, we'd go all the time. i had pucks for days...have no idea what happened to them. i have one now, on my desk at work. everyone comes in, sees it, HAS to pick it up. my oldest loved dino cicarelli, i have a signed card put up-not sure if it's worth money, but it's worth plenty to me!
that's the only thing i miss since moving here, going to the games. cannot wait til next month-we're going to three. tampa, up to d.c. to boo crosby in person, and then back to carolina the next day. the 18th can't get here fast enough. at tampa, we'll be just a couple rows behind the bench! bad thing is, those tix cost less than at the cap center....for that matter, seven tix with better seats in carolina cost less than the three in d.c. worth every penny.

very true!
i just think if you have brodeur, you use him.

but i do think it's a reaction. you can't change up lines, can't fire the coach. seems marty is getting the blame for the loss. but, i don't care much for MB (due to his off ice shenanigans) so i don't feel too bad for him.
