Wow katie... a win machine!
It was a small field, but it had Seaflyte and Mr Charlie in it - they ran 1-2 in the Dunstan Championship on Jan 1 - so there was some quality in it. And he won the race so easily.

CORPORAL JONES

3 g Pentire - Assesarose
5 starts - 2 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third
Trainer: Andrew Scott
Odds: 5-1

Replays:
Best, last start: Championship Stakes (2nd): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_xJ_UH7rgI

+ Never runs a bad race
+ Excellent in Waikato Guineas (2nd), even better in Championship Stakes (2nd)
+ Getting better all the time

- He's running well, but Zarzuela's beating him without any excuses.

Verdict: It looks like this guy might be peaking at exactly the right time. His Championship Stakes run was by far the best of his life so far, and heaps better than his good Waikato Guineas effort. A lot of people are saying he can beat Zarzuela and Katie Lee. We'll see! I think 5-1 is fair.

KING RAEDWALD

3 c Red Ransom - Lady Circles
7 starts, 3 wins, 1 third
Trainer: Kevin Gray
Odds: 11-1

Replays:
Very nice win against low-class opposition Feb 7: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xcbnsy_king-raedwald
Last start: Championship Stakes (3rd): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_xJ_UH7rgI

+ Finished strongly at the end of the 2100m Championship Stakes
+ Trainer great at having horses at their best at exactly the right time (like Daffodil!)
+ Kevin Gray and jockey Hayden Tinsley were at Ellerslie to be with King Raedwald instead of at New Plymouth with Daffodil!

- He was still 3 lengths back from Zarzuela and Corporal Jones. Maybe not quite at their class level yet?

Verdict: This is a really nice colt, and there was a lot to like about his Championship Stakes effort. But I get the feeling he's going to be a better horse in about a year. The stable and jockey are highly confident though, and they always have to be respected. Likely to be the 'wise guy' horse.

MILTARY MOVE

3 g Volksraad - All Night Party
7 starts - 1 win, 2 seconds, 1 third
Trainer: Shaune Ritchie
Odds: 20-1

Replays:
Best: 2000 Guineas (2nd): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8Hyvcnk1EI
Last start: Championshp Stakes (5th): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_xJ_UH7rgI

+ Never, ever runs a bad race - no matter what track, distance, track condition
+ Huge finish in the Championship Stakes

- Hasn't won a race since September.

Verdict: He's never finished further back than 5th in his life, and 6 of his 7 career starts have been in stakes races. But he always seems to find one or two horses that are a tiny bit better on the day, and he hasn't won a race since September. I don't think he can win the Derby, but he could come a nice 2nd, 3rd or 4th if he has a good day.

I love his name.

Well I do!

It's a good name! And yeah, I could see him winning a nice race somewhere.

Big news:

Feel sorry for Michael though. But he gets Imabayboy.

SMOKIN' GUN

3 g High Chaparral - Rapida
7 starts - 2 wins, 1 second
Trainer: Craig Thornton
Odds: 60-1

Replays:

Woodville Rating 70 (1st): http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xcf...oodville_sport
Last start: Waikato Guineas (13th): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJMqU75285M

+ Excellent pedigree - High Chaparral is having an amazing season, and Rapida is the dam of several horses that have done well in stakes races over long distances (Gin Dartre, Courtney, Ivy's League)
+ Stylish win at Woodville
+ Had excuses when he finished 12th, 8 lengths behind Katie Lee, in the 2000 Guineas

- Last in the Waikato Guineas last start. Didn't have a perfect trip, but should have done much better.

Verdict: This is a talented 3yo, but his last-start performance in the Waikato Guineas was too bad for him to be a legitimate contender here. He'd have to improve by at least 15 lengths. Should be closer to 100-1.

Last one!

VOLGUS

3 c Volksraad - Gussy Godiva
10 starts - 1 win, 3 seconds, 1 third
Trainer: Allan Sharrock
Odds: 100-1

Replays:
2yo win: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xcf...hastings_sport
Last start: Rating 70 (2nd): http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xcf...lgus-2nd_sport

+ Half-brother to Rios and Roman Emperor. Roman Emperor won the AJC Derby in Sydney.
+ Very good win against a good field as a 2yo
+ Strong 2nd (against a poor field) over 2000m last time

- No wins as a 3yo

Verdict: I actually really like this horse. He's beautifully bred, and he hasn't done much wrong in his racing career - he's finished in the first five 7 times out of 10. But he hasn't been racing against strong company this year, and hasn't won a race since he was 2. The Derby might be too soon for him, but I still don't think he should be at 100-1. Legitimate chance of finishing in the money.
