I will say I have been bailed out many times on poor betting days, by an off the cuff action play at a track that I had not studied the PP's until I bought the form at the track.
There is no better action than Post Parade handicapping.

I have had some of my best days not knowing who was running prior to that day's races. I love pouring over the DRF the night before but it often leads to a lot of overanalyzing at least with me.
