Terrible tragedy, especially being one of McCarron's first students.
A dangerous sport, even with all the safety improvements to protect jocks (padded starting gates, helmets, vests, safety rail, overgirth, etc) Thirty-five mph balanced between your toes and the tension in your arms. Crazy brave guys. And girls.

Hopefully the surgery goes well and he can still live a good life... just horrible news.

Just an update with unfortunately not much positive news.
Very classy move by Jan Ely to put Matthew Straight on his brother's regular mount on Saturday. That will be a very emotional race http://www.suntimes.com/sports/horse...-arl03.article
