I think the Derby post position draw would be more fun for everyone if the trainers/owners got to hang the actual jockey on a little hook under the gate number.

First of all, Gomez needs to get over himself. Going on TV to announce his decision is unbelievably lame.

Second, if I was Baffert, I would have already kicked him off POTN. The horse is a multiple Grade I-winner, and has won four graded stakes in a row. And Baffert is supposed to hold his breath while the regular jock decides if the horse is good enough?

Gomez should F himself.

This is a a TVG made for TV event. They no longer have any actual race content worth watching so they do this kind of crap. They are going the ESPN way of trying to show their own importance.

I can't blame TVG.

Jesus, why doesn't he take it a step further an have a town hall meeting in the paddock. This way he can field all the questions everyone is going to have.

I hope he finishes last.

I always find it amusing when the jock takes off a horse and then that horse and another jockey end up beating him You know what they are saying riding back to get unsaddled

Maybe Baffert would, but I know for a fact Gomez and Anderson's handling of this has irritated some within Team POTN.

Then they should announce that they are going with a new rider. The fact that they are pandering to this silliness makes them just as guilty as everyone.

To be honest, this whole circus makes me wonder just a little bit about Dunkirk, as no sane person would choose Pioneer of the Nile over Dunkirk for this race, unless there's an untold story. Now, the untold story could be a number of things ( use your imagination ), but the fact that it's being dragged out like this has to make you wonder.

But, there is no reason for Team Zayat to be annoyed, as there are very capable riders without Derby mounts that they could have already signed up to ride Pioneer of the Nile.

I had a similar conversation with a friend of mine, but I thought it was related to whether or not he would get into the race. It's been clear he's in for at least one week now, so why the wait? On the flip side, if they thought POTN was a superstar who could handle any surface, wouldn't they have chosen him already as well?

Yeah, you'd have to be an idiot to choose the lone multiple Grade I-winner in the field who's bred for the distance and dirt, and who has won four straight graded stakes, defeating the winners of the Wood, Gotham, El Camino, Cal Derby, and Ark Derby in the process.

And the fact that he's trained by a three-time Derby winner just adds to the lunacy.

I say go for the Unbridled's Song.

You usually use my name when you talk about me. Are you getting soft in your old age?

Since I know you aren't Dunkirk's biggest fan, does this mean that you think Pioneerof the Nile will be a complete toss? If so, I am genuinely interested in hearing your opinion regarding why, because, while I think you may well be right, I believe this colt figures to be one who will give me trouble when I try to determine how to play the race.
On the one hand, the zero dirt starts is an obvious concern, and he obviously hasn't run a race as impressive as Quality Road or I Want Revenge.
But the fact that Empire Maker and Lord at War were both pretty good 9f+ dirt horses makes me think that he might appreciate the surface switch and the stretchout just like the two very nice colts he defeated in the Robert Lewis seemed to do. He also has good tactical speed, has worked well after his last start, and appears fairly versatile.
Do you think he won't like the dirt, or that he just flat out isn't good enough?

Like anyone should feel sorry for them after the Alaazo/PA Derby fiasco last year.

Default Ron Anderson on HRTV

Gomez to stay with POTN...

And I absolutely love that HRTV stole TVG's breaking news.

I can see the post parade now, where the commentators will make mention of it. And if his choice, or the one he chose off wins....forget about it. It's way over the top, and really kind of silly. But it could make for an interesting side story.
Marketing horses is impossible, but jockeys are around all the time.... but, no horseplayer ever speaks favorably about them, then again, they're not the ones racing needs to market to.

Gomes should be in the paddock with POTN & Dunkirk and start calling their names.. whichever one comes to him first is the one he rides.
