The way people go after scrap metal, they may already be recovered and sold in a dark alley in NJ

Not my area of expertise either, but I would have to say the engine itself and the propellers would be the stuff of worth. Or sell it wholesale to some history buff.

this whole thing stinks of a beta test.

i think the airlines are trying to save money on fuel any way they can. next year when you're on a 747 being towed across the atlantic, don't say no one warned you.

propeller blades are custom for each engine (saw a history/science channel documentary on building them), so wouldn't be reusable according to that.

they were also the first parts of the plane to hit the water, so took the brunt of the impact. I know of someone that took off from O'Hare on their way to Narita on a 747 in which 1 engine fell off over Iowa. Had to go back to O'Hare, but made it back easily.
