Malakoff euthanized after workout
Lynch had some very distressing news to report as Malakoff, a 5-year-old horse owned by Stronach Stable, had to be euthanized after breaking down during a workout here Friday. "He shattered a sesamoid," Lynch said. "Ironically, it wasn't the one that he originally injured." Malakoff had suffered the first injury when finishing first, only to be disqualified and placed fifth, in Fort Erie's Prince of Wales on Julyo16, 2006. The horse did not return to the races until this June 21, and won his second start back in an optional $62,500 claiming race here Aug. 24. Malakoff had registered his lone stakes win in the Grade 3 Marine here in spring 2006, and followed up with a third-place finish in the Queen's Plate. "Not that I want to see any of them get hurt, but he was a sentimental favorite of mine," Lynch said. "It's a bad day." Rest in peace. http://www.drf.com/news/article/99762.html |

Sunburnt Lad...
http://www.thoroughbrednews.co.nz/sp....aspx?id=37657 Lightning claims Sunburnt Lad 14 Nov 2008 By Rob Burnet The wild storms that lashed Victoria overnight and into early Friday morning have claimed the life of the successful sprinter Sunburnt Lad through an unlucky lightning strike. Sunburnt Lad had just gone out to spell after finishing his spring campaign when he was struck down reported Sky Channel’s Andrew Bensley after speaking with part-owner David Moodie. The five-year-old gelding, trained by Mathew Ellerton and ridden by Chris Symons, was third in last Saturday’s Group I Patinack Farm Classic over 1200m at Flemington, completing a four race spring that saw two wins, including the Group II Caulfield Sprint over 1100m on October 18th, followed by a second in the Group II Salinger Stakes over 1200m at Flemington when a clearer running would have seen another win. Sunburnt Lad, another good racehorse by Scenic out of the Blazing Sword mare Razor Blade, raced for Moodie’s Contract Racing Syndicate and NS and Mrs GC Psaltis, winning eight races from just 18 starts, and with three placings earning stakes of $379,000. |
