get a second opinion.

or can you get it pulled? unless of course it's right up front! have never had a root canal, but my mother said once she'd get hers pulled and get dentures instead of having one of them done.

That sounds a tad excessive. I personally would go for a gold crown vs. the porcelain type - they fit better, are slightly malleable so they will correct with your bite, and look ghetto fab. I'd think 400 bucks ought to cover the crown and probably another 550-600 for the RC is more like it, but it depends where you are I guess - def get a second opinion.

The worst part about any dental procedure (beside the bill after it's done) is the anticipation of pain. Sitting there with you mouth open waiting for it to hurt. I was expecting the worst when I went for my RC. But my dentist numbed me up good and made sure the novicane (or whatever he gave me) was working to the full extent untill he started the work. He explained that once he killed the nereve or took it out (really don't remember the specifics) it would pretty much be a painless procedure. And it was, but it did take a couple of visits. But, I was comfortable in the chair and it was a walk in the park.
Once you trust him or her 100% you just sit there and try to relax as much as possible. The whole key is being able to trust your dentist. I trust my dentist very much, to the point where I don't even dread going anymore. He took out an impacted wisdom tooth I had and I won't lie, it was hell. It was so bad that he called me up at home that night to see how I was feeling. But he did a tremendous job. When I heard about needing the RC, I just remembered about the wisdom tooth and realized that nothing could compare to that expierence. It wasn't even close. Just make sure you find a dentist that you like and more importantly trust.

Good Luck!
