I don't think these guys are in contention for the job, just filling in..right? Still think Dooley leaves AP and they bring Bill Downe's jr to Arlington. Although..I'm not sure Dooley would want to leave...nice long meet

Travis has been doing an excellent job at Louisiana Downs, I wanted to mention that.

Collmus is consistently good, one of my favorites...

long term, I'd vote for Kurt Becker or Travis Stone (or me!)

Not explicitly, BUT:

"This showcase of talent is a unique and mutually beneficial way for us to introduce some of the outstanding worldwide candidates to Churchill Downs, our horse racing fans and the city of Louisville," Gates said. "Our committee will reconvene at season's end and, based on positive reviews, I think there's a good chance that our next announcer will come from this group. I would expect a final decision before year's end."

How about we do something RADICAL and don't hire anyone to calls the races? Use the money to install TRAKUS for ACCURATE screen displays and DATA (works really well at DMR, where the MUMBLING LOW TALKER Denman is always on MUTE). Use what's left to STREAM the races LIVE on the web. Those in it for ENTERTAINMENT purposes will disagree, of course.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

i never viewed the announcer as being there to entertain, moreso to inform. maybe they could get an announcer and trakkus?

and i can't stand denman. i try to hit the mute when the gates open, so as to be spared his growl of 'and away they go'.

Regardless of who gets the job, it is a great compliment to Travis that after announcing full time for under two years he is even being considered for the position. He's already a big winner.

Trakus doesn't work so well when your listening to the calls on ATR

Default Interesting concept at Churchill Downs

Congratulations to all five candidates for Churchill Downs race calling gig.

I will openly admit that I am biased in favor of Travis Stone. He brings rare mix of youth, experience and maturity. Travis really reaches out and makes connection with racing fans and handicappers -- both on-line and in person. He and I have traded message over last two Louisiana Downs meets and I enjoy his perspective on thoroughbred racing today.

His youth (24 years old), experience (race calling at Louisiana Downs), and maturity (genuine student of thoroughbred racing since grade school) present Churchill Downs with unique opportunity to attract next generation of patrons. CD's approach is novel and will garner attention during its upcoming fall meet. Go, Travis, Go!

John G. Dooley is current CDI employee and does excellent job at Fair Grounds and Arlington Park. His brand value may have greater worth through his continuing work at these two historic venues rather than moving to CD job. Unless CDI or he makes statement, no one will know reason (or reasons) that he was not included in this group of race callers. Personally, I am glad that John will continue calling races at Fair Grounds each winter.
